At Educational Advocacy & Consulting, we understand the challenges that come with trying to secure the right school services for your child. From identification to implementation, there’s a lot to navigate — and the process can be overwhelming for parents who don’t understand the ins and outs of the school system. As an expert group of Advocates and Educational Consultants serving the Chicago and

Washington DC areas, we’ll assist your family through the entire process of procuring services for your child. If your child is currently receiving services, we can also work with you to make sure that he or she is getting the appropriate services for their needs. This can be in the form of:

Receiving accommodations under section 504, designed for students who have a “physical or mental impairment” that “substantially limits one or more major life activities”

Obtaining a complete evaluation to determine if your child has a disability in need of Special Education supports and services through an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan)

When you work with EAC, we’ll conduct observations, complete a thorough review of your child’s records, refer your family to outside providers if needed, and collaborate in a cooperative manner with your child’s school team. If you are struggling to come to an agreement with your school district regarding services, we can intervene through Early Resolution, Mediation, and Formal State Complaints. In addition to our advocacy services, we’re very excited to announce that we’ll soon be opening our Dyslexia Center! Here, we’ll offer high-quality reading and writing instruction to help children successfully meet the literary standards in school and for the future. Creating the most appropriate opportunities for your child is our mission and we’re here to help with whatever you need to make that happen. Visit our website for more information or call (773-230-8320) or email us today to set up a free 30-minute consultation. We look forward to getting to know you and your child!

Reading can become a source of anxiety when a child has repeatedly experienced frustration, difficulty, or embarrassment around it.

For students with dyslexia, challenges with reading can make situations like reading aloud, being called on in class, or comparing themselves to their peers feel especially stressful.

Over time, that anxiety can lead children to avoid reading altogether because they’re trying to avoid a situation that feels difficult or discouraging.

The good news? The right support can change that.

When children are given instruction that meets their needs and the opportunity to experience success, they can begin to build both their skills and their confidence. ❤️

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!

A library card can open the door to so much more than books. Libraries give children access to stories, information, imagination, and opportunities to discover what they love.

And importantly, that access doesn’t have to look the same for every reader. Many libraries offer audiobooks, large-print books, e-books, graphic novels, and other formats that can help make reading more accessible and enjoyable for different learners.

For a child who struggles with traditional print, finding the *right* way to access a story can make all the difference.

Sometimes, supporting a reader starts with simply making sure they have access to the right books and the freedom to find the ones that make them want to keep reading. ❤️📖

If your child doesn't have a library card yet, September is a great time to get one!

When your child is struggling, there may be more going on beneath the surface.

Sometimes, there’s a missing piece.

Maybe it’s the right accommodation. Maybe it’s appropriate instruction, meaningful progress monitoring, a well-developed goal, or stronger communication between home and school.

Sometimes, it’s simply understanding what your child’s current plan actually provides and whether it’s meeting their needs.

Advocacy isn't about asking a child to work harder around a barrier. It’s about understanding the barrier and looking for what’s missing.

Because sometimes, finding that missing piece can change everything.

September is Attendance Awareness Month...a good time to talk about attendance with a little more understanding and a lot less judgment.

For students with disabilities, getting to school consistently isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Health needs, anxiety, sensory challenges, learning differences, and other barriers can all make regular attendance more difficult.

And while attendance matters, so does understanding why a student may be struggling to attend.

The right support can remove barriers and make regular attendance more possible. That might mean classroom accommodations, a better understanding of a student’s needs, or working together with families and school teams to find what actually helps.

Attendance Awareness Month is about encouragement, not blame and making sure students have the support they need to feel connected, supported, and ready to learn.

If attendance has become a challenge for your student, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

When reading and decoding require extra effort, some students naturally rely more heavily on meaning, context, imagery, and connections to take in and remember information. This can lead to real strengths in areas like storytelling, recalling facts, and remembering what they see.

Those strengths matter. When we recognize how a student learns best, we can use those strengths to help them access new information, demonstrate what they know, and feel successful in the classroom...not just measure them by the areas that are hardest.

Sometimes, knowing what to ask for is half the battle.

Accommodations can help students with ADHD access learning and navigate school with fewer barriers, and many parents don’t realize these supports may be an option.

Understanding what’s available can help you feel more confident advocating for what your child needs.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help!
