Early childhood caries, formerly called baby bottle tooth decay, refers to severe tooth decay in young children, often affecting the front upper teeth. It is commonly caused by prolonged exposure to sugary liquids including juice, milk, and formula — particularly when given in a bottle at bedtime. Prevention includes avoiding bottles at bedtime, limiting juice intake, cleaning teeth after feeding, and scheduling dental visits starting at age 1.
