Despite the name, a total hip replacement doesn’t mean your entire hip, pelvis, or leg is replaced.

During the procedure, the damaged surfaces of the hip’s ball-and-socket joint are replaced with implant components designed to restore the function of the joint.

Swimming and other water-based activities are lower impact and may place less stress on an arthritic hip than high-impact exercise. Always ask your care team which activities are appropriate for your condition and comfort level. If you’ve recently had surgery, be sure to get clearance before returning to the pool.
