We’re sometimes way too quick to call something a “personality trait”, with such a negative voice.

“She’s controlling.”
“He’s a people-pleaser.”
“She’s too sensitive.”
“He doesn’t trust anyone.”
“She has to do everything herself.”

But what if some of those things aren’t really who you are?

What if they’re things you learned to do because, at some point, they worked?

Maybe controlling things helped you feel a little less out of control with a parent that parentified you.

Maybe people-pleasing kept the peace with someone aggressive and big

Maybe perfectionism helped you avoid criticism from@your narcissist mother.

Maybe over-explaining came from constantly having to prove that your perspective was valid and you were worth it.

And maybe being completely independent meant you never had to risk needing someone who let you down.

These may not serve you in present day, but it means it once did. And I think that distinction matters so much in trauma work.

Because you can want to change a pattern without hating the part of YOU that developed it.

Processing is so different then just talking about a thing.

Eye Movement Integration not only feels so different from simply talking about trauma because trauma isn’t stored as a story alone.
It can live in images, sensations, emotions, body responses, and implicit memories.
Eye Movement Integration uses guided eye movements while accessing that material, helping the brain revisit it from a place of present-day safety rather than past threat.

The goal isn’t to forget what happened.

It’s to help your nervous system learn:

“That happened then. I am here now.”

And often, that shift changes everything.

The internet often uses “narcissist” and “sociopath” interchangeably, but they are not the same diagnosis.

While Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) can share traits like manipulation or reduced empathy, they differ in their defining features, motivations, and diagnostic criteria.

It’s also important to remember that personality disorders are complex clinical diagnoses. You cannot diagnose someone based on a few behaviors or social media posts.

If you’ve experienced abuse, your experience doesn’t become more or less valid because of a diagnosis. The impact of the behavior matters.

These slides were written by one of my clients, who asked if I would share them.

They wanted people to understand what surviving severe trauma and Dissociative Identity Disorder can actually look like from the inside.

Many experiences with complex dissociation are difficult to describe. Some are frightening. Some don’t fit what people expect trauma to look like. Because of that, survivors often carry shame alongside the trauma itself. Along with the intense fear of what a ‘greater level of care’ might look like based on a professionals lack of understanding.

My hope is that these words help someone feel seen, help a loved one better understand, or encourage clinicians to stay curious about experiences they may never personally encounter.

Thank you to my client for allowing me to share such a vulnerable part of their healing.

Part 2 is on our profiles, where they share more about what healing in therapy looked like.

I’d love to hear your thoughts or answer respectful questions in the comments.

A countries history isn’t just about the triumphs, it’s about understanding resilience, recognizing injustice, honoring courage, and seeing the full humanity of people whose stories have too often been ignored.

When we teach our children Black history, Jewish history, we’re also teaching empathy.

Critical thinking.
Compassion.
And the ability to recognize how trauma, discrimination, hope, and community shape people’s lives. These are so much more than history lessons.

When we shift from curiosity about a person to compassion for a person, therapy changes.

Some questions create pressure. Others create safety.

With dissociative disorders, trust isn’t built by gathering more information. It’s built by respecting the protective strategies that helped someone survive.

What questions would you add to this list?
