Forty-plus years at the bedside taught me this: we measure what we value. Fire Departments now track sleep, cardiovascular risk, exposure history, mental health — real progress.
But breathing, the function every other readiness metric depends on, still isn't measured with that same rigor. Respiratory readiness starts with a baseline: lung and respiratory muscle function assessed, then tracked over time.
Training it means structured, repeatable practice, not techniques reached for only under stress. If sleep and cardiovascular health belong in the readiness model, so does breath.
