Happy Wellness Wednesday

Connection Is Heart Health

The fifth “R” in The 5-R Remedy is Rewarding Relationships with yourself and loved ones.

This one is deeply important.

We often talk about heart health as if it only lives in the body.

But the heart is also affected by the quality of our relationships, our sense of belonging, our emotional safety, and the way we relate to ourselves.

Supportive relationships can help calm the nervous system.

They can make healthy habits easier and remind us we are not alone.
They can offer encouragement, accountability, laughter, perspective, and love.

But relationships can also be stressful.

Some relationships leave us feeling depleted, unseen, criticized, or constantly on edge. Over time, that emotional strain can influence stress, sleep, choices, and overall well-being.

That is why rewarding relationships include both connection and boundaries.

They also include the relationship you have with yourself.

Do you speak to yourself kindly?
Do you keep promises to yourself?
Do you allow yourself to rest?
Do you honor your needs?
Do you make room for joy?
Do you believe your health is worth tending to?

Sometimes the most important heart-health shift begins with this:

“I matter, too.”

When you begin treating yourself as someone worthy of care, your choices change.

You may start asking for help.
You may stop over-giving.
You may create boundaries around your time and energy.
You may choose relationships that feel mutual and nourishing.
You may become more honest about what your heart truly needs.

Heart health is not meant to be a solo project.

We heal, grow, and sustain change better when we feel supported.

This week, consider one relationship that nourishes you and one relationship pattern that drains you. What small step would support your heart in either area?

If stress, over-giving, loneliness, or unsupportive relationship patterns are affecting your heart-health journey, coaching can provide a safe space to reconnect with yourself and create healthier rhythms of support.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

Real Food is Nourishment from the Earth, Not the Factory Line

The fourth “R” in The 5-R Remedy is Real Food to nourish, energize, and boost mood.

Real food is food that your body recognizes.

It grows from the earth.
It swims in the sea.
It comes from a farm, a garden, a tree, a vine, a field, or a pasture.

Vegetables. Fruits. Beans. Lentils. Nuts. Seeds. Whole grains. Herbs. Fish. Eggs. Lean proteins. Olive oil. Simple ingredients.

Real food is different from what I sometimes call “stuff-that-fills-the-void.”

You know the kind.

Wrapped in plastic.
Designed in a lab.

Engineered to make it hard to stop eating.

Full of ingredients you would not keep in your kitchen.

Produced at the end of a factory line and marketed as convenience, comfort, or “health food.”

This is not about perfection, restriction, or food shame. So, invite that critic in your head to take a coffee break, so you can be fully open to this message.

It is about noticing the difference between food that truly nourishes you and products that may leave you more tired, inflamed, hungry, or craving more.

For heart health, real food makes all the difference.

A heart-supportive way of eating often includes more fiber-rich plants, colorful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins, and less highly processed food, excess added sugar, and refined carbohydrates.

But food is also about energy, mood, culture, pleasure, and daily rhythm.

That is why I do not like fear-based food messaging.

Most people do not need more food rules.

They need a way of eating that supports their health and still feels like a life they want to live.

A simple place to begin:

Look at your plate and ask,
“Did most of this come from the earth, or from a factory?”

Then aim to add, not just subtract.

Add color.
Add fiber.

Add lean protein.

Add flavor.

Add something fresh.

Add something that helps your body feel steady and satisfied.

Your heart does not need a perfect diet.

It needs consistent nourishment.

This week, try adding one real-food upgrade to a meal you already eat.

Add berries to breakfast. Add greens to lunch. Add beans to soup. Add roasted vegetables to dinner. Small shifts count.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice and want a heart-supportive way of eating that feels clear, grounded, and doable, I would love to help.

Restore — Relaxation, Recreation, and Quality Sleep Are Not Optional

The third “R” in The 5-R Remedy is Restore through relaxation, recreation, and quality sleep.

This is the one many high-performing people try to skip.

They eat better.
They try to exercise.
They take the medication.
They schedule the appointments.

But rest?

That gets treated like a luxury.

The truth is, restoration is not laziness. It is physiology.

Your heart, nervous system, hormones, blood pressure, blood sugar, appetite, mood, and energy are all influenced by how well you recover.

Chronic stress keeps the body in a state of activation. Over time, that can affect the way we sleep, eat, move, connect, and heal.

And sleep is not just “down time.” It is repair time.

Quality sleep supports the body’s ability to regulate blood pressure, metabolism, inflammation, emotional resilience, and power wash your brain’s byproducts.

When sleep is poor, everything feels harder: food choices, movement, patience, motivation, stress management, thinking and connecting with others.

Restoration also includes recreation.

That means making room for what replenishes you.

Not just collapsing on the couch because you are depleted, but intentionally choosing moments that help you feel human again.

What brings you JOY?

A walk by the ocean.
Music.
Laughter.
Prayer or meditation.
Creative expression.
Time in nature.
Reading for pleasure.
A few slow breaths with your hand on your heart.

You do not need to earn rest by reaching exhaustion first.

Your body is allowed to receive care before it breaks down.

This week, ask yourself:

“What restores me?”
“What drains me?”
“What is one small boundary that would protect my sleep or peace?”
“What is one thing I can do for five minutes that signals safety to my nervous system?”

Your heart is listening to the pace of your life.

If stress, poor sleep, or constant depletion are affecting your well-being, coaching can help you build realistic restoration practices that support your heart health and your life.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

The second “R” in The 5-R Remedy is Rev Your Body with tailored and fun physical activity.

Notice the words: tailored and fun.

Not punishing.
Not extreme.
Not something you dread.
Not a plan designed for someone else’s body, schedule, or life.

Movement is one of the most powerful tools we have for heart health, but too many people think it only “counts” if it is intense, sweaty, long, or done at a gym.

That is simply not true.

Movement can be a walk after dinner.
Dancing in the kitchen.
Strength exercises while watching TV.
Gardening.
Stretching.
Taking the stairs.
Walking with a friend.
A few minutes of movement between meetings.

For many busy, high-capacity people, the problem is not lack of information.

They know movement matters.

The challenge is making it realistic, enjoyable, and repeatable.

That is where personalization matters.

If you sit most of the day, your heart and blood vessels benefit when you interrupt long periods of sitting. If you are exhausted, starting with gentle movement may be wiser than pushing yourself harder. If you hate the treadmill, maybe the treadmill is simply not your path.

Movement should not feel like a sentence.

***Please note: if this is a new movement habit for you and you experience shortness of breath, chest discomfort, unusual fatigue, lightheadedness, or any other discomfort while moving, please stop and contact your doctor.

One of my favorite questions is:
What kind of movement would feel like care, not punishment?

Because when movement feels good, meaningful, or even just doable, you are far more likely to keep showing up.

Your heart does not need you to become a different person overnight.

It needs you to begin building a relationship with your body that includes strength, stamina, circulation, balance, and joy.

This week, try choosing one form of movement that feels approachable and repeatable. Start smaller than you think you “should.” Let success build momentum.

If you know you need to move more for your heart health but struggle to make it happen consistently, I can help you create a movement strategy that fits your real life.

Redefine Your Mindset. It Matters to Your Heart

For the coming weeks, I will explore each of the “5-R’s” to provide a deeper dive into the concepts and how they work synergistically to build a healthier life.

The first “R” in The 5-R Remedy is Redefine: redefining your mindset to enhance your health.

This matters more than people realize.

Many people approach heart health from a place of fear, shame, or self-criticism.

“I should have known better.”
“I have no willpower.”
“I already messed up, so what’s the point?”
“I hate exercise, but I have to do it.”
“I can’t eat any of the foods I like.”

That kind of thinking does not usually lead to lasting change.

It often leads to avoidance, overwhelm, and giving up.

Redefining your mindset means shifting from punishment to partnership.

Instead of asking, “How do I force myself to do better?”
Try asking, “What would support me today?”

Instead of “I failed again,”
Try “What can I learn from this?”

Instead of “I have to exercise,”
Try “How can I help my body feel stronger and more alive?”

Instead of “I can’t have anything,”
Try “What foods help me feel nourished, steady, and energized?”

Mindset is not pretending everything is fine. It is not fake positivity.

It is learning to speak to yourself in a way that helps you take the next healthy-er step.

This is especially important for heart health because fear can be a powerful wake-up call, but fear alone is rarely a sustainable strategy.

Compassion, curiosity, and self-trust are much more effective long term.

Your heart does not benefit from you bullying yourself into change.

Your heart benefits when you become someone you can count on.

This week, notice the tone of your inner voice. Is it harsh? Impatient? Defeated?

Then gently ask: “What would I say to someone I love who was trying to take better care of their health?”

Start there.

If your heart-health journey has been tangled up with fear, shame, or self-criticism, coaching can help you redefine the way you approach change.

I would be honored to support you.

Introducing the 5-R Remedy: A Holistic Path to Heart Health

Heart health is not just about cholesterol numbers, blood pressure readings, medications, or what happens in a doctor’s office.

Those things matter, of course.

But as a Cardiac Nurse and Holistic Health & Longevity Coach, I have seen again and again that the health of the heart is deeply connected to the way we live each day.

How we think.

How we move.

How we rest.

How we eat.

How we relate to ourselves and others.

This is the heart of The 5-R Remedy:

Redefine your mindset. Care for yourself like you would a beloved friend.
Rev Your Body with movement that fits your life and brings you joy!
Restore with relaxation, recreation, and quality sleep.
Choose Real Food that nourishes and energizes your body.
Build Rewarding Relationships with yourself and the people you love.

This is a holistic approach because we are not just a heart, or a diagnosis, or a lab result.

We are whole human beings.

Stress can affect blood pressure.
Poor sleep can impact cravings and inflammation.
Isolation can weigh heavily on the nervous system.
A harsh inner critic can make healthy changes feel like punishment.
Food and movement can either deplete us or help us feel more invigorated.

When we address health from this wider lens, we stop asking, “What is wrong with me?” and start asking, “What support does my body, mind, and heart need now?”

That is where sustainable change begins.

If you are concerned about your heart health and tired of trying to fix everything at once, this is a beautiful place to begin. Small, meaningful shifts in these five areas can add up to powerful change over time.

Your heart does not need perfection. It needs steady, loving support.

If you would like help creating a lifestyle strategy that supports your heart and actually fits your real life, I invite you to schedule a free call with me at https://wellnessflame.as.me/schedule.php

Happy Wellness Wednesday

I’m currently reading The Longevity Plan by Dr. John D. Day and Jane Ann Day with Matthew LaPlante.

Dr. Day is a physician, a cardiac electrophysiologist, to be exact - smart man.

And like many busy, high-achieving professionals, his schedule was overbooked, stressful, and demanding.

He coped with it by eating on the run. Between procedures, he grabbed doughnuts or bagels for breakfast and snacks. Lunch often consisted of a slice of pizza...or two. And on the long days, dinner at the hospital was cheeseburgers, fries, and cookies.

He rationalized it by telling himself he was active.

After all, he was a marathon runner.

But he wasn’t “making up for it.”

Despite all of his medical knowledge, by his mid-forties, Dr. Day found himself overstressed, overweight, and dealing with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

That part really matters.

Because so many people already know what they “should” be doing.

We live in a world where health information is available 24/7. We can look up heart-healthy recipes, exercise plans, stress management tools, sleep tips, supplements, podcasts, and expert opinions in seconds.

And yet, knowing is not the same as living it.

That “I know, but I don’t” place is often an important trailhead for my clients.

The overbooked schedule.

The habit of putting everyone else first - all the time.

The uncertainty of where to begin.

The frustration of saying, “I’ve tried so many times, and it just doesn’t work for me.”

The old belief that self-care is self-ish.

This is where coaching can help.

Not by piling on more information, but by helping you create a personalized, realistic, heart-centered strategy that fits your actual life.

Because your health does not need another lecture.

It needs space, support, clarity, and a plan you can actually live with.

If you are ready to move from “I know what I should do” to “I’m actually doing it,” I invite you to schedule a free call with me at https://wellnessflame.as.me/schedule.php

Let’s explore what support could look like for you.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

The garden is in!
And it’s got me thinking…

There is something deeply nourishing about eating with the season.

When we choose local, seasonal fruits and vegetables, we are often choosing produce that was picked closer to peak ripeness, traveled a shorter distance, and arrived on our plate with more freshness, flavor, color, and nutrients.

From a heart-health perspective, this matters.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that support blood pressure, cholesterol balance, blood vessel health, digestion, inflammation reduction, and overall longevity.

And nature has such a beautiful rhythm.

In the Northeast and nearby regions, this time of year brings us a wonderful variety of fresh, seasonal options, including:

🍓 Strawberries
🍒 Cherries
🌱 Asparagus
🥬 Arugula, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and other leafy greens
🫛 Snap peas and shelling peas
🌿 Fresh herbs
🥕 Radishes
🌰 Beets
🥦 Broccoli
🥬 Cabbage
🧅 Scallions and spring onions
🥒 Early cucumbers
🥬 Bok choy and other tender greens
🍄 Mushrooms*

If you are lucky enough to have a garden, this is such a beautiful time to eat what you grow.

And if you do not have your own garden, visiting a local farmer’s market is a wonderful way to support the farmers in your community while filling your kitchen with beautiful, nourishing food.

It does not have to be complicated.

Add berries to your breakfast.
Toss fresh greens into your lunch.
Roast beets or asparagus with dinner.
Keep snap peas or radishes ready for a crunchy snack.
Try one new vegetable from the farmer’s market this week.

Small, seasonal choices add up.

Your body notices.
Your heart notices.
Your community notices.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by all the nutrition advice out there and would like support creating heart-healthy habits that actually fit your life, I invite you to schedule a free call with me at https://wellnessflame.as.me/schedule.php

We can explore what is possible, one realistic step at a time.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

I spent a good chunk of this past weekend turning over our garden and tending to the health of the soil. Gardening is something that simultaneously grounds me to the past and inspires hope for the future.

The past is reflected in the memories of Dad sowing his garden every year when I was growing up…and the many hours my brothers and I spent weeding that very same garden. Of course, we would have rather been riding bikes, climbing trees or playing kickball with friends. I can still see Mom blanching, packing and freezing the volumes of veggies that were harvested and would nourish us most of the way through the coming winter.

Going further back into family history, my father grew up on a farm in CT, where he, my grandfather, grandmother and aunt worked tirelessly to produce almost everything that the family ate year round. My father jokes about spending most of his childhood with his head on the side of a cow. It was his job, before school every day, to milk the cows in the barn. This milk was for drinking, baking and making homemade butter. My grandmother used to trade milk and fresh eggs for the flour, sugar and coffee that they weren’t able to produce on the farm.

Inspiration for the future comes after time and muscle-aching effort are spent in the garden. It takes the shape of hope and the imagined vision of what will be harvested in the coming weeks and months. As Dad has always said, “There is no store-bought tomato that comes even close to the taste of one from the garden.”

I look forward to the health-enhancing dishes we will create from what we sow this year…and, later, defrosting the Swiss Chard and savoring the flavor of summer as the frigid wind howls from the north next winter.

But for now, I just want to be in this moment and enjoy the juxtaposition of being grounded in the past and hopeful for the future. It’s an intriguing suspension and flow of time.

What about you? What lessons from the past inspire your healthy future? DM me and share your story. I’d love to hear it.

Happy Wellness Wednesday

The Slip That Said It All

I was sitting in a meeting recently when someone meant to say “wellness”…

…but what came out was “hellness.”

And honestly?

It may have been the most accurate health assessment I have heard in a while.

Because for many high-capacity, successful people, the pursuit of wealth can quietly turn into a state of hellness.

The calendar is full.
The inbox is overflowing.
The responsibilities are endless.
The nervous system is running a marathon while the body is sitting in a chair.

Meals are rushed. Sleep is negotiated. Exercise becomes “when things calm down.”

And stress? Stress gets treated like an unavoidable side effect of success, or worse yet…like the not-so-new “normal.”

Until the body starts sending memos.

Blood pressure creeps up.
Cholesterol numbers shift.
Sleep becomes less restorative.
Energy fades.
The chest tightens.
The joy gets harder to access.

And suddenly, the question becomes:

What is the point of building wealth if it costs you your wellness?

Now, please do not misunderstand me. I am not against success, ambition, leadership, or financial stability.

Not even a little.

But as a cardiac nurse and holistic health & longevity coach, I have seen what happens when people spend decades building a beautiful life they are too exhausted, stressed, or unwell to fully enjoy.

That is where “wealth and hellness” becomes a powerful little wake-up call.

True wealth is not just what is in your accounts.

It is also having the energy to enjoy your life.
The strength to move through your day.
The clarity to make good decisions.
The resilience to handle stress.
The time to connect with the people you love.
The health to keep showing up for what matters most.

Your wellness is not a luxury item you add later.

It is the foundation that allows you to actually live the life you are working so hard to create.

So the next time you find yourself sacrificing your body, your sleep, your peace, your relationships, or your joy in the name of success, pause and ask yourself:

Am I building wealth… or am I accidentally living in hellness?

And if that question lands a little too close to home, you do not have to figure it out alone.

I help high-capacity people with concerns about their heart health create realistic lifestyle strategies that fit their real lives — so they can protect their health, restore their energy, and live with more purpose, presence, and joy.

Because the goal is not just to succeed.

The goal is to be well enough to enjoy the life you have worked so hard to build.

If you are ready to move from hellness back toward wellness, I would be honored to walk beside you.

Schedule a free call with me at https://wellnessflame.as.me/schedule.php and let’s get started.
