I think if we lose Kayla, it will be an even greater loss for Nashville.
In the dozen years I've lived here, I've seen many positive changes, and I've tried to shine a light on those improvements whenever I could. I've also tried to contribute through my actions more than my comments, and I've generally kept my complaints to myself.
This, however, is one issue where I feel compelled to speak.
The condition of animal control in our community today—and the way we've responded to stray dogs and cats, abandoned and abused animals, and the ongoing challenge of unaltered and feral populations—is dramatically different from what it was a decade ago.
That progress did not happen by accident. It came through countless hours of hard work, compassion, and persistence, due in large part to Kayla, along with the support of others who care deeply about the welfare of animals in our community.
Losing someone with that dedication would be more than losing an employee. It would be losing experience, relationships, and the momentum that has helped move Nashville in the right direction.
More than 500 people have signed a petition supporting former Nashville Animal Control Officer Kayla Lackey after her termination. Residents spoke at City Hall as ABC 27 awaits records and comment from city officials.
