Every year, I look forward to the National Medical Association Annual Convention, and every year, it feels less like a conference and more like a family reunion.

There’s something special about being surrounded by physicians and colleagues who are committed to excellence, service, and lifting one another up. It’s a time to learn from brilliant minds, share knowledge, reconnect with friends, welcome new faces, enjoy amazing food, and create memories that extend far beyond the lecture halls.

This year in Puerto Rico was no exception. I left inspired by the conversations, grateful for the opportunity to present, and reminded of how important community is in medicine.

Thank you to everyone who made this year’s meeting so memorable. I’m grateful to be part of the NMA family, and I’m already looking forward to next year.

Today, I’m speaking at the National Medical Association about the consequences of delayed dermatologic diagnosis and treatment in Black women.

Conditions such as central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, hidradenitis suppurativa, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, lupus, acne, and other dermatologic diseases may be overlooked, minimized, or recognized too late. These delays can lead to irreversible hair loss, acne scarring, disease progression, increased morbidity, and significant psychosocial harm.

My lecture, “The Cost of Dismissal: Morbidity, Mortality, and Psychosocial Harm from Delayed Dermatologic Care in Black Women,” focuses on how physicians can improve recognition, address patient concerns, and refer earlier when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Earlier recognition can change the course of disease and, in some cases, save lives.

Don’t try this at home!
DIY is fine for arts and crafts but not for chemical peels, lasers, or injections. Damage can be done to the skin that cannot be undone.

PLEASE see a board-certified dermatologist for procedures such as chemical and especially when you have a complication. I’ve treated several patients with bad outcomes from products and peels they bought online. We are help to offer education and care for your skin’s specific needs.

Chemical peels come in multiple strengths and combinations. The higher the percentage, the deeper they go. They are not advised to be performed at home. Please see a medical professional such as a board-certified dermatologist.

Growing up I wanted to be a veterinarian. In high school I changed my mind to taking care of humans instead lol. My primary care physician asked me, “why would you study all of those animals, when you can just learn one?” He made a great point! Veterinary medicine isn’t just cute puppies and kittens that I wanted to care for. They learn to care for many species. Shout out to the vets out there!

I always loved science, anatomy and physiology, and helping people. When I decided to be a medical doctor, I knew in high school that I wanted to be a dermatologist based on my experience as a patient. My experience then mirrors the stories my patients share with me today. Seeing a doctor that looks like you is powerful, and for some, it is life changing.

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that not only causes scaly patches in the skin. The color of these can appear red, pink, purple, or deep brown based on your skin tone. It commonly occurs on the elbows, knees, scalp, nails, and joints. This is due to inflammation in the skin and joint spaces. Psoriasis patients may also be at risk for heart disease and metabolic disease such as diabetes. Stress reduction, balanced nutrition choices, and medications work together to decrease the impact of psoriasis inside and outside of the body.
