When someone you care about is in suicidal crisis, the instinct is often to ask 'why would you want to leave us?' But that question misses what's actually happening.

Suicidal thoughts emerge when pain feels unbearable AND options feel nonexistent. The person isn't necessarily rejecting life or the people in it-they're looking for relief from suffering that feels unmanageable.

This reframe matters because it changes everything:

✓ Instead of 'why would you abandon us,' you can ask 'what pain are you trying to escape?'
✓ Instead of focusing on reasons to stay, you can help them find ways to reduce the pain itself
✓ Instead of shame or judgment, you can show up with curiosity and genuine care

If you're supporting someone in crisis-or if you've been there yourself-this distinction can be the difference between feeling heard and feeling more alone.

Has this reframe shifted how you think about or talk about suicidal crisis? What's changed for you? Share below-your experience might help someone else feel less isolated.

I've watched so many couples recognize themselves in one of these four patterns - and that moment of recognition? That's where everything shifts.

You probably already know which one shows up in your relationship. Maybe it's the criticism that stings every time. Maybe it's the wall of silence that leaves you feeling completely alone. Maybe it's the contempt that makes you question if you even like each other anymore.

Here's what I know: naming it isn't about blame. It's about power. Once you can see the pattern clearly, you can interrupt it. And that interruption is where repair actually begins.

So tell me - which horseman shows up most in your fights? Drop a comment below. Let's build a conversation around what's really happening in our relationships.

I've raised three neurodiverse adult children, navigated autoimmune diagnosis, perimenopause, and rebuilt my life after divorce-all while running my practice solo.

For years, I thought resilience meant staying unaffected. Powering through. Never asking for help because I "should" be able to handle it.

That's not resilience. That's burnout dressed up as strength.

Real resilience is messier: naming what's actually hard right now. Recalibrating your capacity without feeling like you've failed. And-here's the part that took me longest to learn-asking for support instead of defaulting to independence.

If you're managing multiple caregiving roles, chronic illness, hormonal shifts, or your own neurodivergence while showing up for everyone else, you already know this exhaustion. You don't need another list of coping strategies. You need permission to stop proving you don't need help.

I work with women untangling this exact pattern-the chronic over-functioning, the resentment that builds, the guilt when you finally set a boundary. We rebuild what resilience actually means for your life, not the one you think you should be living.

As a marriage and family therapist, one of the core principles I work from is the understanding that healing doesn’t happen in isolation — it happens in the context of relationships.

Our earliest relationships shape how we view ourselves, how we connect with others, and how we navigate the world. When those relationships are marked by safety, trust, and emotional attunement, they foster resilience and emotional well-being. When they’re marked by disconnection or harm, they can leave lasting emotional wounds.

Therapeutic relationships — and safe, supportive personal relationships — provide opportunities to experience new, healthier patterns of connection.

Through these interactions, we can:
✔️ Repair attachment wounds
✔️ Develop healthier boundaries
✔️ Build emotional regulation skills
✔️ Learn to trust and be vulnerable again

Relational healing is powerful because it reminds us that change is possible, and that we don’t have to do it alone.

If you’ve struggled in relationships or with feeling safe in connection, know that healing is possible — one relationship at a time.
