Advances in retinal care continue to create new possibilities for patients living with diabetic macular edema (DME).
Research presented by Dr. Eric Schneider highlights the potential of higher-dose aflibercept therapy to help patients maintain vision and retinal health while extending the time between treatments.

As retinal treatments continue to evolve, our physicians remain committed to advancing the field and bringing the latest evidence-based care to the patients we serve.

Men are at a higher risk for certain retinal conditions, including Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC), a condition that can cause blurred or distorted central vision when fluid builds up beneath the retina.

During Men's Health Month, it's important to remember that overall health and eye health are closely connected. Many health conditions can affect the retina and threaten vision.

Men are more likely to experience certain risk factors associated with serious eye disease, including:

✔️ High blood pressure
✔️ Heart disease
✔️ Diabetes complications
✔️ Smoking-related vascular damage
✔️ Eye injuries

These conditions can increase the risk of retinal disease and vision loss if left untreated.

Regular eye exams can help detect retinal conditions early, often before significant vision loss occurs. This Men's Health Month, make your vision part of your health plan.

Our Tennessee Retina Research Department attended the RCA National Research Meeting, where research sites from across the country come together to share successful site processes, discuss new studies, hear physician insights, and explore ways to strengthen clinical research programs.

Brittany Prescott, our Lead Research Coordinator, presented on how ideas shared during the conference can be implemented within our own practice. One major topic discussed was improving communication and teamwork between clinic and research teams — something many research sites continue to navigate.

Dr. Schneider also led a session on Geographic Atrophy and participated in a panel during one of the study sponsor breakout sessions, providing valuable insight into retinal diseases, treatment approaches, and study ex*****on to help research staff continue learning and growing.

We’re proud of our research team’s commitment to continuous learning, teamwork, and advancing clinical research for our patients. 💙

Vision loss affects more than eyesight. It impacts daily life, independence, and emotional well being. That’s why access to education, support, and community matters.

Organizations like the Foundation Fighting Blindness provide valuable resources for individuals and families navigating retinal diseases and low vision.

At Tennessee Retina, we believe patient care goes beyond treatment alone. 💙

Inherited Retinal Disease (IRD) Genetic Testing Awareness Month shines a light on the importance of early testing for individuals with inherited retinal conditions. Genetic testing can help provide answers, guide treatment options, and support families in better understanding their risk.

Early detection can make a meaningful difference in diagnosis, care, and hope for the future. Talk with your TNR retina specialist to learn if genetic testing is right for you. 💙

Most people think of melanoma as skin cancer, but melanoma can also develop inside the eye.👁️

Ocular melanoma is a rare but serious form of cancer that develops from pigment-producing cells inside the eye. Because of its rarity, many patients have never even heard of it before diagnosis.

At Tennessee Retina, our Ocular Oncology team cares for patients facing this complex condition through advanced imaging, treatment planning, long-term monitoring, and collaboration with researchers dedicated to improving outcomes.

What makes ocular melanoma especially challenging is that research and treatment options for metastatic disease remain limited. That’s why organizations like Eye on Grace Foundation and A Cure In Sight Ocular Melanoma are so important — helping fund research, support patients, and raise awareness for a cancer many people don’t realize exists.

This Melanoma Awareness Month, we’re recognizing the patients, families, physicians, researchers, and advocates working to bring more hope, visibility, and progress to the ocular melanoma community. 💙

💙 Cameron Cassady – 5 Years

"Working at TNR has been such a wonderful time! I've had the pleasure of working alongside so many strong and talented individuals that have pushed me to be the best I can for our patients. I'm grateful to have been given the opportunity to wear several hats at the company and am continually honored to help our patients secure the care they need in all the ways I've gotten to. I'm looking back happy with my last five years here while looking forward to the next five!"

💙 Brandy Pruett – 10 Years

"I can’t believe it’s already been 10 years! I enjoy working at Tennessee Retina because of the people and the purpose behind what we do. Being part of a team that truly cares about patients and supports one another makes coming to work meaningful. Over the years, I’ve grown both professionally and personally, and I appreciate the trust, flexibility, and teamwork that make Tennessee Retina feel more than just a workplace; it feels like family."

💙 Stacey Hackett – 15 Years

💙 Marcia Drivas Maguire – 20 Years

"As a clinical manager, my journey here is a little unique. I actually started as a patient. After spending so much time at TNR receiving care that literally helped save my vision more than once, I was eventually offered a job. What started as gratitude turned into a career and second family.
Over the last 20 years, I've had the privilege of caring for patients while also helping manage the fast pace, everchanging environment behind the scenes. I truly love building relationships with patients, supporting them through difficult moments, and thriving in the organized chaos that comes with making everything run as smoothly as it can every day. TNR will always hold a special place in my heart because it changed my life in more ways than one."

💙 Julia Wray, BS, COA – 25 Years

💙 Dena Beck, COA – 25 Years
Director of Provider Relations and Marketing
"Beginning my career as a technician and progressing into executive leadership has given me a deep appreciation for every role that contributes to exceptional patient care and the relationships that make that care possible. Over the past 25 years at Tennessee Retina, I have had the privilege of witnessing extraordinary advancements in retinal treatments and patient outcomes, doing so within a culture built on friendship, collaboration, mentorship, and meaningful professional growth opportunities. Today, I am honored to lead teams and initiatives within TNR, RCA, and Cencora that are focused on provider relations, strategic growth, philanthropy, and the patient experience, all with the mission of saving sight and enhancing lives. I am grateful to the Tennessee Retina physicians whose vision and dedication continue to build the foundation for so many great things. I am thankful for the special relationships I have been fortunate to share with our doctors, my colleagues, referring partners, and our patients over the years, and I look forward to the challenges and successes in the years to come."

Our featured image in April was captured by Anita Bingaman on our CLARUS Fundus camera! 🏆📷

This is a photo of a Racemose Angioma. A Racemose Angioma is a rare, typically congenital (present since birth) vascular malformation of the retina, characterized by dilated, tortuous vessels. Findings in this image include flower-like vessels around the optic nerve. This condition usually only affects one eye and is often discovered incidentally in a routine eye examination.
