SCO State Day Looks Toward the Future
SCO State Day looked a little different this year, with construction underway across campus. And for good reason—it is an exciting time for Southern College of Optometry.
SCO recently broke ground on a $35 million expansion and renovation project as part of its Greater Vision Campaign. The first phase includes a new 38,000-square-foot, two-story facility with expanded space for Pediatrics and Vision Therapy, along with a new library, study spaces, campus store, coffee shop, and outdoor terrace. Phase II will transform the front of SCO’s iconic 11-story tower with a more modern, open entrance and additional student spaces.
Construction wasn’t the only unexpected activity on campus during State Day. Shortly after we arrived, a water main burst, forcing the State Day reception to relocate to the Activity Center. SCO’s staff handled the unexpected change seamlessly, and the event continued without missing a beat.
Affiliates from many different states were represented at State Day, giving students an opportunity to learn more about practicing optometry across the country. TAOP President Wayne Connell, OD, Executive Director Patience Long, and Director of Events Megan Collins enjoyed chatting with the many students who stopped by the Tennessee table.
One of the hottest topics of conversation was Tennessee’s newly expanded laser authority. Students had questions about when the new law and rules will take effect, what the requirements will look like and how they can prepare to practice in Tennessee. There were also plenty of conversations about where students are considering practicing after graduation—and, of course, we encouraged them to take a good look at Tennessee!
That evening, we headed to Central BBQ, where students heard the “Top 8 Things Every Optometry Student Needs to Know,” along with an update on organized optometry in Tennessee. We also shared how student involvement in our legislative efforts this year played an important role in helping push our laser legislation across the finish line.
The following day, we heard from a panel discussing artificial intelligence and how they are incorporating AI into their everyday practices. It was an interesting look at how emerging technology is already being used in optometry and what it may mean for the future of the profession.
It was a great couple of days in Memphis, and we thank Southern College of Optometry for once again being such a gracious host. With major campus improvements underway and so much happening within the profession, it was exciting to spend time at SCO and talk with students about the future of optometry—and hopefully the future of optometry right here in Tennessee.
