Today, Dr. Kumar is a board-certified podiatrist, foot and ankle surgeon, and Certified Wound Specialist Physician with expertise in diabetic foot care, wound care, heel pain, ingrown toenails, athletic injuries, trauma, and foot and ankle surgery.

Outside of the office, Dr. Kumar is a proud mom of four sons and loves spending time with her husband and family. You'll often find them exploring local parks, hiking, traveling, cooking, or spending time at church. She's also passionate about diabetic education and medical missions.

If putting on compression socks feels like a workout before your day even starts, this one’s for you šŸ˜…šŸ§¦

Compression socks are designed with more compression toward the foot and ankle and gradually less farther up the leg. For people who experience swelling during travel, long car rides, or extended periods of sitting, they can be a helpful tool when appropriately recommended. The tricky part is getting them on.

Dr. Neuhaus demonstrates an easier technique: roll the sock down first, place your foot inside, and then gradually roll the remaining material up your leg.

Another important tip? Put your compression socks on first thing in the morning, before swelling develops. Waiting until your ankles and legs are already swollen can make them much harder to put on.

If swelling in your feet, ankles, or lower legs is becoming a regular problem, schedule an appointment with Neuhaus Foot & Ankle using the link in the comments.

Should babies wear shoes as soon as they start walking? šŸ‘¶

Not necessarily.

In this video, Dr. Thurston explains why barefoot time can help babies develop balance and coordination while they're learning to walk. Once they're walking outdoors, a lightweight shoe that protects their feet is usually the best choice.

He also shares the shoe brand he trusts for his own children and what he looks for in a good first shoe.

If you have questions about your child's feet or walking development, schedule an appointment with one of our specialists using the link in the comments.

The girl grip, but make it podiatry because making a second trip was never an option šŸ’…šŸ˜‚

Somehow there’s always room for the podiatry supplies, the Alani, the glasses, the claw clip…and probably one more thing if absolutely necessary.

Just a little behind-the-scenes fun from the Neuhaus Foot & Ankle team!

When someone tells us, ā€œMy ankle hurts,ā€ our next question is always centered around what part of the ankle area is actually causing the pain? šŸ‘£

Your ankle is surrounded by joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and bones that can all cause similar symptoms. Sometimes what feels like ankle pain is actually coming from structures below the ankle, including the subtalar joint or an area called the sinus tarsi.

That distinction matters. An ankle sprain and a subtalar joint injury aren’t necessarily treated the same way, which is why simply treating the spot that hurts without understanding the cause may not solve the problem.

A proper evaluation helps us pinpoint which structure is involved and determine the treatment that makes sense for you.

Ever noticed a bump along the outside of your foot and wondered if it’s supposed to be there? šŸ‘€šŸ‘£

In many cases, yes! The bump at the base of your fifth metatarsal is a normal part of your foot anatomy. Everyone has it, although it may be more prominent in some people.

What deserves attention is when that area starts to hurt.

A tendon called the peroneal brevis attaches near this part of the foot. When it becomes irritated or inflamed, you may notice pain and tenderness along the outside of your foot, and that normally harmless bump can suddenly become much more noticeable.

If pressing on that area hurts or you’re experiencing persistent pain along the outside of your foot, don’t assume it’s just your anatomy.

Schedule an appointment with Neuhaus Foot & Ankle using the link in the comments so we can determine what’s causing your pain.

That pain around your big toe joint might be a bunion…but it also might be something completely different šŸ‘£

Dr. Neuhaus sees patients who point to their big toe joint and assume the pain is coming from a bunion. But several conditions can cause pain in that same area.

Arthritis can lead to bone spurs around the joint. The small sesamoid bones underneath the big toe can become inflamed or fractured. Turf toe, tendonitis, and even gout can also cause big toe joint pain.

The symptoms may occur in a similar area, but the cause, and therefore the treatment, can be very different.

That’s why persistent big toe pain deserves an evaluation rather than an assumption.
