The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) lower quarter rotation test.

This is one of the most difficult screens to "pass" when it comes to biomechanics of the golf swing.
This is the most often failed screen I see with Nashville golfers.

This test assesses if we have adequate hip mobility, foot and ankle mobility, and stability through the lower extremity and pelvis. The key is that this screen is done in a weight bearing position, bringing into play any golf posture and stability problems that might not be seen with passive testing on the table.

Every time I spend time at a club for member events, I pick up on something new. Having the opportunity to quickly examine, listen to, and work on 100's of golfers gives us insight into common areas of struggle for Nashville golfers. This includes golf performance struggles, mobility restrictions, and pain and injury.

My most recent time at The Grove highlighted a region that kept coming up, the thoracic spine. More specifically, thoracic spine extension restriction and how it is related to swing characteristics and pain.

Learn how thoracic spine mobility impacts the golf swing, posture, and performance. Discover how improving rotation and movement quality can reduce compensation patterns, improve consistency, and help prevent pain in golfers.

This lateral bound drill is great for late stage rehab plans. We are working to improve the tolerance of the ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints to absorb and create force quickly. We enforce a pattern that uses the strong posterior chain as a force generator and force absorber opposed to the knee and quad.

The foot has to play along to absorb force and maintain balance.

Last, we can also add in front to back and back to front angles of ground reaction force to mimic the forces as they are generated in the golf swing.

This is a great drill to address weight shift and pelvic/ hip turn in the golf swing. We can also use it in low back, hip, knee, and ankle rehab to begin loading these joints and structures dynamically again.

Focus on loading through the heel on the elevated side and braking from the lead side to slow the weight down.

This is a great drill for golfers who have improved their access to a clean weight shift and turn at the hips and pelvis. It is important with this drill to progress to a heavy band or heavy med ball rather quickly, forcing these joints to create more force, interact with the ground more efficiently, and then learn to absorb these forces (match them) on the lead side.

For anyone with a history of ACL tear, knee injury, hip injury, or chronic ankle sprains, this drill is also a fantastic way to work through and eliminate compensatory motor patterns and inhibition.

This week, we discussed the difference between back swing and downswing loading. Most golfers think they need to build the tension in the backswing, going further and further before springing back for a fast downswing.

The truth is the best golfers in the world use the downswing to create the forces for a fast swing. It is the process of initiating the downswing that creates the speed!
