Sixty percent of mothers do not breastfeed for as long as they intend.

Lactation and latching difficulties, concerns about infant nutrition, an early return to work, and limited support can make breastfeeding difficult to start and even harder to continue.

Mothers need knowledgeable care, adequate leave, workplace protections, and practical support at home to make breastfeeding possible.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we recognize the barriers mothers face and our shared responsibility to remove them.

I have struggled with posting about pregnancy and infant loss on this page.

So much of my work here is about encouragement, and for a long time I never stopped to think about what encouragement looks like inside grief too.

I didn't want an expectant mother finding this page and be immediately met with loss in such a tender season...

But we have gone too long brushing pregnancy and infant loss under the rug, and done a poor job normalizing grief, when every one of us will grieve eventually, whether we like it or not.

So here is my hope for this guide: that it becomes a source of encouragement for the moms, dads, and families walking through loss right now. Life is not promised to us. Only the Creator knows our beginning from our end. That deserves reverence for the life that was, and space for the ones mourning it.

Please share this with mothers, fathers, the caretakers around them. If you know someone walking through this, go through the guide yourself first, then ask her if you can apply for a few of these programs on her behalf, so she carries one less thing.

The full guide is linked below. If this is you right now, or someone you love, I see you and you are not alone.

I love coming across scriptures that speak so well to matrescence. Psalm 116 is one of those.

This is for the mothers who believe in the Word. Who know that it is life, and that it is good.

Reading and meditating on these verses helps so much for the moments that come when you have no words of your own and your spirit is just crying out.

As a doula, I firmly believe that whoever is speaking to you and over you matters. ESPECIALLY when you are carrying, birthing, or nurturing life, which is one of our highest callings. What is spoken over you needs to align with the Word. Life and death are indeed in the power of the tongue.

Words matter.

I have seen this in my own life. My transition in birth was marked by the intensity of opening while being disregarded at the same time. All I could do in that moment was pray. Out loud or in my head, I still do not know which. It is one of my strongest memories from my first birth. Speaking the Word when I could not speak anything else.

And one thing I will say plainly. If the heaviness after birth lingers or grows, reach for a provider, and talk to a counselor. Choosing that support is wisdom, and it is its own kind of faith.

Save this and come back to it when the moment is yours.

What verse has carried you when you had no words of your own?

You don’t have to have everything figured out to start asking better questions.

If you’re somewhere between “I think I want a homebirth” and “I have no idea where to start,” this is for you.

A Certified Professional Midwife is your out-of-hospital option. She attends homebirths and birth center births. In Tennessee, she is licensed through her own separate council, distinct from the nursing board that governs hospital-based midwives.

But having a CPM doesn’t automatically mean you’ve found the right one.

The questions in this carousel are not meant to intimidate her or you. They are conversation starters. The way she responds will tell you far more than any credential on her wall.

A midwife who welcomes these questions is one who respects your role in this process. That matters more than almost anything else when you’re deciding who to trust with your birth.

If you’re in Greater Nashville or virtually and want support navigating your options, I’m here for that conversation.

DM me “MIDWIFE” and let’s talk. Or book a free connection call at the link in bio.

Most women don’t realize there are different types of midwives.

And even fewer realize that two providers with the same credentials can approach birth completely differently.

Because labor doesn’t follow a textbook timeline.

There is a wide variation of normal in pregnancy and birth. And when things unfold differently than expected, your provider’s philosophy shapes every decision being made with you.
-Do they trust physiology?
-Do they collaborate with you?
-Do they support informed decision-making?

It’s about choosing someone whose approach aligns with your values, your goals, and the kind of support you want in birth.

This is the conversation I have with every client before they hire anyone.

If you’re in Tennessee or Greater Nashville, this carousel is specifically for you.

Midwifery is regulated state by state in the US, so what’s available and legal where you live matters.

Save this.

Follow along because next I’m breaking down the questions to ask CNMs, CPMs, and traditional midwives before hiring anyone.

Your birth story is your own. There is not another one like it. And it is being written by every choice you make.

Pregnancy comes with a lot of noise. What to buy, what to eat, what class to take, what everyone else did. It’s easy to get so caught up in doing pregnancy that you stop actually feeling it.

When did you last slow down and ask yourself what you actually want? Not what’s expected. What feels true to you, for your body, your baby, your birth.

You have full permission to choose what feels right for you. To pray. To be still. To get outside and get back in touch with the thoughts that the noise has covered up.

Every birth I’ve attended has changed me. In my first year I’ve been in the room for VBACs, homebirths, freebirths, birth center births, and twins. Each one a reminder of why this work chose me.

Every birth is a rebirth. For the mother, for the baby, and honestly for me too.

If you know a pregnant woman who needs to hear this, share this with her.

And if you’re the one still looking for your person, I’m here. Link in bio to book a free connection call.
