What is the deal with lemon juice and kidney stones? 🍋
Lemon juice is famous for helping with kidney stones because it has a lot of citrate in it. Citrate can help stop calcium kidney stones from forming - so low urine citrate levels can cause calcium stones.
HOWEVER, not everyone with kidney stones has low urine citrate! Only a 24 hour urine test will tell you if low citrate is the cause of your stones.
If you do have low urine citrate, squeezing a lemon wedge into your water here and there probably isn't really going to move the needle. Most people need about a 1/2 cup of lemon juice per day to really increase urine citrate levels.
Lots of other aspects of what you eat can impact urine citrate levels too! Including eating plenty of fruits and veggies (ALL of them count!) and avoiding excess non-dairy protein.
Bottom line: There is no single "kidney stone diet" or advice that works for everyone. Nutrition for kidney stones MUST be individualized to your 24 hour urine test results. ⬅️ THIS is where working with a kidney stone dietitian comes in!
