If your child uses their finger or a pencil to follow along while reading, that’s not a habit.
That’s a coping mechanism. When eye tracking is off, the eyes can’t smoothly move from word to word on their own.
So the brain finds a workaround: use something physical to hold the place. It looks like a quirk. It’s actually a sign. Struggling with reading might have nothing to do with how clearly your child sees.
20/20 eyesight doesn’t tell you how well the eyes move, how accurately they jump from line to line, or whether they’re losing their place mid-sentence.
Those tiny movements, called saccades, are a skill. And like any skill, they can be evaluated and trained.

When a child covers one eye it’s usually written off as a habit.

But it’s actually the brain compensating for eyes that aren’t teaming properly.
