Independence Northwest, Inc. Independence Northwest is the independent living resource for people with disabilities living in northwest Connecticut.

We believe the problem lies with society, not the individual. The preferred solution is to fix society to fit the individual. A disability is not a disease but a condition, often times permanent, that affects or restricts an individual’s ability to perform certain tasks. With our approach, the person with the disability controls the service instead of the professional; the desired outcome of servi

ce is to achieve control over daily living whenever and wherever possible. Using this approach, we developed a radically different set of services at Independence Northwest that are based on two fundamental principles:


• To ensure equal access and equal opportunity and,
• to empower people with disabilities to achieve greater independence so that they can lead fuller and more satisfying lives. People with disabilities are the controlling force behind our organization and have a voice in everything that we do: policy decisions, day-to-day operations, services and advocacy directions. As with all independent living organizations, the vast majority of people who work for Independence Northwest have disabilities. We work to meet the needs of our community by offering effective and purposeful services.

HERE IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON EARLY VOTING!

Primaries - August 11, 2026

The Connecticut Primaries are scheduled for August 11, 2026. If you affiliated with a political party, you may vote in the primary for your party. You cannot vote for candidates in primaries for the other parties. Unaffiliated voters, or voters who do not belong to a party, do not vote in primaries.

Please note: This is not the general election. That election is in November 2026 and any registered voter can vote for anyone on the ballot.

Early Voting Dates and Times
August 3, 2026 (Monday) - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
August 4, 2026 (Tuesday) - 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
August 5, 2026 (Wednesday) - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
August 6, 2026 (Thursday) - 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
August 7, 2026 (Friday) - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
August 8, 2026 (Saturday) - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
August 9, 2026 (Sunday) - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Please note that early voting is available everyday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Extended voting is available on August 4 and 6, 2026 when the polls are open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Understanding the DOJ Clarification
Recent discussions about a DOJ legal opinion have created questions and concerns throughout the disability community. The DOJ has clarified that its opinion does not change existing law.
The ADA, Section 504, and the Olmstead decision remain in effect, and people with disabilities continue to have the right to live, work, and participate in their communities.
While people with disabilities have not lost their legal rights, there is concern that reduced federal enforcement could make it harder to ensure access to home- and community-based services.
