📞 Why does talking on the phone matter?

A recent GMA3 segment highlighted a growing trend of kids using old-fashioned phones—including rotary phones and "Tin Can" phones—instead of relying solely on FaceTime and texting.

Experts noted that voice-only conversations require children to use skills that are often less practiced when visual cues are available:

• Listening carefully without seeing facial expressions
• Taking turns in conversation
• Staying focused on auditory information
• Using descriptive language to communicate ideas
• Asking questions when they don't understand
• Building confidence speaking independently

When children can't rely on visual cues, emojis, or quick text responses, they learn to communicate more intentionally. These are important skills that support friendships, school success, self-advocacy, and future workplace communication.
