JCAM Be On the Lookout (BOLO)

The Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts (JCAM) is deeply disturbed by a malicious and destructive act that occurred on 8/5/26 at Hebrew Progressive Cemetery, one of JCAM’s Grove Street cemeteries in West Roxbury.
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 5th, JCAM security cameras captured two individuals entering the cemetery grounds in a vehicle that was later determined to be stolen. Security footage shows the vehicle intentionally driving into the cemetery, leaving the cemetery, and returning a few minutes later. The vehicle was driven into the brick entrance pillars and iron fence, causing significant damage to both as well as several monuments. After committing this crime, both individuals abandoned the vehicle and left the cemetery on foot.
JCAM immediately contacted law enforcement and was informed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. Given the deliberate nature of the incident and the damage to the entrance of our Jewish cemetery, including the pillars supporting the historic Hebrew Progressive Cemetery sign, JCAM has asked law enforcement to investigate whether this incident was motivated by antisemitism and should be classified as a hate crime. The police department has currently assigned three units to the case, including the Civil Rights Unit.
At this time, we do not know the motive of the two perpetrators, and we will not speculate while the investigation is ongoing.
We have also reported the incident to the Anti-Defamation League of New England and are cooperating fully with law enforcement.
The intentional destruction of a Jewish cemetery is deeply troubling. Cemeteries are sacred spaces where families entrust us with the care and dignity of their loved ones. JCAM remains committed to protecting these grounds, preserving the memory of those laid to rest here and supporting the families and communities we serve.
