Our "flagship house" in Anchorage.

"This house is perhaps the most challenging I've encountered. It's in a very exposed location and we experienced high winds (40-60 mph), driving rain, and cool (40 degrees) temperatures almost continually for the whole project. At the time, the house had no rain gutter, so we worked under plastic sheeting to keep the walls dry. But the customer was great and fed us very well! We blasted with glass media, sanded, then buffed with Osborne brushes prior to application." (Home was stained with Capture, Bronze Pine and sealed with Conceal, Gold Tone.) Winter Interior Chinking Schedule Closing Soon

One of the most effective ways of improving the energy efficiency of your log home is chinking. Air leaks allow warm air to escape from around windows, doors, eaves and purlins, while cold air from outside penetrates under window sills, bottom logs, in corners, and through cracks that may have opened up as the building settled.

There are still a few weeks left for you to schedule an interior chinking project before my exterior season begins.

Interior chinking is one way to help reduce condensation of interior moisture on lower logs and in corner joints - moisture which can lead to mold and rot. Exterior chinking keeps the weather where it belongs - outside!

In cold climates, it is also beneficial to keep furniture and other items that might block room heat, at least six inches from logs that form an exterior wall or corner. This will increase the flow of warm interior air to the logs. Warm, dry interior log surfaces will experience less condensation and moisture issues.

If you have frost buildup around purlins, above windows, and under eaves, your log home may benefit from chinking.
