If you’ve ever walked through an older cemetery, you may have noticed that many graves are arranged with the deceased’s feet toward the east and head toward the west.

This tradition has deep roots in Christianity. Historically, graves were often positioned this way so the deceased would symbolically face the rising sun and, according to Christian tradition, be facing east at the resurrection.
The practice also gave many cemeteries a consistent layout, though burial customs vary by culture, religion, cemetery and time period.

On this day in history, October 4, 1957: Sputnik 1 became the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth.

Its launch marked the beginning of the Space Age and changed the course of space exploration forever. Though it was only about the size of a beach ball, Sputnik’s journey around Earth was one giant step into a whole new frontier!
