We were honored to welcome former JSAS HealthCare, Inc. Medical Director and nationally recognized addiction physician, Dr. Susan F. Neshin, for an impactful presentation on co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders.

After 38 years of dedicated service, Dr. Neshin may be retired—but we’re grateful she continues to support JSASHC as an invaluable medical consultant.

Her presentation highlighted critical insights, including:
• The high prevalence of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
• The importance of universal screening and ongoing reassessment
• The need for accurate, comprehensive diagnosis over time
• How substance use can mimic or worsen psychiatric symptoms
• The value of integrated, patient-centered, and multimodal treatment approaches
• Safer prescribing practices and the risks of medications like benzodiazepines
• Strategies for managing anxiety, insomnia, and polysubstance use
• The role of harm reduction in improving outcomes and engagement

🎉Thank you, Dr. Neshin, for your continued leadership and commitment to advancing high-quality addiction care. 👏

Kratom is often marketed as a natural remedy, but "natural" doesn't always mean safe.

Kratom use has been linked to dependence, withdrawal symptoms, increased risk of overdose when combined with other substances, and serious health complications. The FDA has raised concerns about its safety, including the presence of compounds that may increase its potential lethality.

Before using kratom, know the facts and talk with a healthcare professional about safer options for pain management and recovery support.

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, help is available.
