Insurance Verification: A Real Example
Recently, our team spent three to four hours on the phone verifying ABA insurance benefits for a family.
The call was transferred four times — from membership, to claims, to behavioral health, and finally to authorization — with several transfers back and forth. Each time, we re-explained the child's situation, re-verified identity, and answered the same questions again. The final answer: the plan does include an ABA benefit, but it does not cover in-home services — only clinic-based or tele-health delivery. That may sound like a simple "no." But reaching that answer wasn't simple at all. Many insurance representatives are not familiar with which department handles ABA claims. Some only see a surface-level benefit listed. Some only recognize clinic-based services. Others redirect callers to authorization without a clear answer. Without persistence, most calls end in "unclear" or "likely not covered." For a family, that's not where the process should end. What parents need to know is specific: Can services begin? Can they happen at home? If in-home isn't covered, are there other options — another benefit, or a self-pay plan that works for the family?
We've found that insurance questions are rarely a complete dead end. Even when one path isn't available, our role is to verify everything that can be verified, and give families a clear, accurate answer — not a guess. We can't guarantee every case resolves the way a family hopes. But we are committed to giving families clarity, not ambiguity.
This is part of how we support every family we work with.
