“Why would I even THINK that?”

Have you ever had a thought pop into your mind that was upsetting, strange, scary, or completely out of character?

That may be an intrusive thought.

Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that seem to appear out of nowhere. They might sound like:

• “What if something terrible happens to my child?”
• “What if I lose control?”
• “What if I accidentally hurt someone?”
• “What if I said something inappropriate?”
• “What if I made the wrong decision?”
• “Why did I think that? Does that mean something is wrong with me?”

Here’s something important to remember:

🧠 A thought is not an intention.
🧠 A thought is not an action.
🧠 Having a thought does not mean you want it to happen.

In fact, intrusive thoughts often feel so disturbing because they conflict with what you actually value.

Trying desperately to push the thought away, analyze why you had it, or repeatedly seek reassurance can sometimes make it feel even more powerful.

Instead, practice noticing it:

“That’s an intrusive thought. I don’t have to solve it, prove it wrong, or give it meaning.”

Then gently bring your attention back to what you were doing.

If intrusive thoughts are causing significant anxiety, taking up a lot of your day, or leading to checking, reassurance-seeking, avoidance, or repetitive behaviors, talking with a mental health professional can help.

🌿 You don’t have to believe everything your brain says.

📚✨ Back-to-School Tips for Students with ADHD ✨📚

The start of a new school year can be exciting—but for children with ADHD, it can also bring anxiety, overwhelm, and difficulty adjusting to new routines. A little preparation now can make a big difference!

Here are a few ways to set your child up for success:

✅ Start moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier 1–2 weeks before school starts.

✅ Re-establish daily routines for getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, and packing backpacks.

✅ Visit the school if possible so your child can become familiar with the building and classroom.

✅ Create a homework station that is quiet, organized, and free from distractions.

✅ Use visual schedules or checklists to help your child remember each step of the morning routine.

✅ Practice organizational skills by cleaning out backpacks, labeling supplies, and using folders for each subject.

✅ Talk about any worries your child has and help them problem-solve instead of avoiding their fears.

✅ Celebrate strengths! ADHD also comes with creativity, curiosity, energy, and unique ways of thinking.

Remember: Progress is more important than perfection. The goal isn’t a flawless first week—it’s helping your child feel confident, supported, and ready to learn.

💙 Every small routine you build today creates a smoother tomorrow.

🟢 The Circle of Control

Feeling overwhelmed? Stressed? Anxious? Sometimes it’s because we’re spending too much energy trying to control things that simply aren’t ours to control.

💚 Inside Your Circle of Control:
✔️ Your attitude
✔️ Your choices
✔️ Your words
✔️ Your effort
✔️ How you respond to challenges
✔️ Your self-care
✔️ Asking for help when you need it

⚪ Outside Your Circle of Control:
✖️ Other people’s opinions
✖️ The past
✖️ Traffic
✖️ The weather
✖️ Other people’s behavior
✖️ Unexpected life events
✖️ Every outcome

When we focus on what we can control, we often feel calmer, more confident, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges.

✨ The next time anxiety starts to take over, ask yourself:
“Is this inside my circle of control?”

If the answer is no, practice letting it go.
If the answer is yes, take one small step forward.

Remember: You don’t have to control everything to find peace.

💙 At Grace Therapy, we help children, teens, and adults build healthy coping skills, manage anxiety, and focus on what matters most.

Panic attacks can feel terrifying—but they are not dangerous.

A panic attack is a sudden wave of intense fear that can happen without warning. You may experience:
💙 Racing heart
💙 Shortness of breath
💙 Chest tightness
💙 Dizziness
💙 Shaking
💙 Sweating
💙 Feeling like you’re losing control or having a heart attack

Although panic attacks are frightening, they typically peak within 10–20 minutes and will pass.

If you experience panic attacks:
✨ Focus on slow, steady breathing.
✨ Ground yourself by noticing 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste.
✨ Remind yourself: “This is a panic attack. It will pass.”

If panic attacks are interfering with your daily life, know that help is available. Therapy can help you understand your triggers, reduce anxiety, and regain confidence.

🌿 You don’t have to face panic alone.
