This sweet family came to see me when baby Maya was just 12 days old after a long, difficult birth. She was struggling to latch, especially on one side, had a strong head rotation preference, and her little body just seemed tense and uncomfortable.
Within her first few visits, Mom noticed she was so much more relaxed. Latching became easier on both sides, the ni**le shield was gone, the clicking and popping off improved, and she was comfortably turning her head both ways. 💜
There was still one piece of the puzzle we needed to figure out. Maya continued to have a lot of spit-up, tension, and slower weight gain, so I brought in my friend and IBCLC mentor Shanee Faithful Lactation Support . We then referred Maya to Dr. Jude Crutchfield rocklinkidsdentist for an evaluation, where she was diagnosed with a tongue tie and had it released.
This is where I absolutely love the team approach. Shanee and I work so well together with these babies. Through gentle chiropractic and cranial work, my role is to help improve brain-to-body communication, allowing the nervous system and whole body to function more efficiently and unwind patterns of tension. After a release, that work continues as baby learns to move differently and the whole body integrates that new mobility. Shanee guides families through wound care and breastfeeding while supporting oral motor function and helping baby learn how to use that new mobility. 💜
Since her release, Mom says Maya is “WAY more chill.” She’s more comfortable on her back and in the car seat, sleeping longer stretches, opening her mouth wider to latch, and feeding beautifully on both sides. She’s transferring milk much more efficiently and gaining weight so much better. 🥹
I love getting to be one piece of the team supporting these little ones. Watching Maya become more comfortable in her body and watching breastfeeding become easier for both her and her mama has been so special. 💜🐝
