DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE (DDD) is a painful cause of back and neck pain that comes and goes and is usually caused by "old" trauma. (That 'minor' fender bender you had as a teen or that time you fell off your horse or your bike or any number of other injuries that you didn't die from!)

It is characterized by a visible "thinning" of the spinal disc as seen on an x-ray, usually only at one or two levels (the levels that were hurt way back when), and often causes "osteoarthritis' of the spinal joints. With time the damaged disc(s) progressively get thinner, and the bone spurs can often grow larger.

Historically medical treatment for DDD has been epidural steroid injections or prescription opioids (not so much anymore though) and anti-inflammatory medications to help with the pain, swelling and function loss associated with DDD.

But now there is a 'new' treatment for this often painful and debilitating condition and that new treatment is "non-surgical, spinal decompression". Research has shown that there is a high percentage of patients who, when treated with non-surgical spinal decompression, actually GAIN height to their degenerated discs, reduce their pain levels and GAIN functionality - and without any significant and dangerous side effects that comes with repeated use of steroids, opioids and spinal injections.

I am certified (twice now) in the use of non-surgical spinal decompression and have been getting great results using this treatment combined with low level laser therapy.

I remember hearing, as a kid, "boy, when you get older you are going to wish you hadn't done that". (There were a lot of "thats" back then). While that warning from my childhood is true on several levels, it is especially true when it comes to spinal discs.

Who here hasn't done something - well, less than smart - when they were younger? We used to jump off of farm equipment instead of climb down. We routinely lifted things that weighed more than we did - just because we could. I can remember climbing trees at the Walker pits and jump out into the water...sometimes we wouldn't jump far enough and land sitting up on the bank. Yep...stupid.

And all of those traumas, without me realizing it at the time, were causing damage to my spine that would far outlast any cuts, bruises or broken bones. As a chiropractor I get to see, on a daily basis, other folks experiencing back and neck problems as a result of those traumas we all have experienced in our pasts.

Did you know that our spinal discs are 86% water? After being in practice for the last 45 years, I have come to believe that the old saying is true - "all roads lead to disc". Disc damage leads to disc degeneration which leads to disc bulging (sometimes disc tears), which leads to spinal joint (facet) damage/arthritis and can also be responsible for disc herniations and pinched nerves.

How is this relevant for you? Preventing the trauma in the first place is huge - but - if that ship has sailed, then taking care of your discs can also be very helpful.
Things like:
* not lifting too much and learning to lift properly.
* not sit or stand too long (that time frame is different for each of us - you have to learn yours).
* learning and doing a core exercise program that works for YOU (there are a lot of them out there - I like them on an exercise ball).
* simply saying 'no' to certain activities that you KNOW are harmful to you.

I have other tips and ideas - if you would like just reach out!

I get asked all of the time about INVERSION TABLES, so I thought I would share some thoughts about them.

While inversion tables are generally considered safe and sometimes helpful, you need to be aware of some risks associated with their use:

1. Obviously the inversion table will increase the pressure to your head, neck and upper body generally. So, if you have:
* high blood pressure
* heart disease
* glaucoma or any other eye disease
* problems with your inner ear
* problems with your lungs
* on blood thinners
* pregnant
You might want to reconsider using your inversion table.

Inversion table therapy has also been known to break blood vessels, cause bleeding in the retinas in your eyes and has been sometimes associated with headaches and blurred vision.

And finally, believe it or not, some people have actually fallen off of their inversion table when it malfunctioned (broke) - apparently that is not that uncommon of an occurrence!

It is a good idea to get clearance from you P*P before you jump right on that inversion table!

It has sure been a week for this. Just a reminder for those injured backs out there: DO NOT PUT HEAT on your swollen back for the first 48 hours after your injury. USE ICE!

And when you do use ICE, only use it for 10-15 minutes at a time. (Ice has been shown to actually CAUSE swelling ("Hunter's Reflex") if you leave it applied longer than 20 minutes).
