Dove Support Ministry Inc. was established as a 501(c) (3) organization in 2012 by a determined woman and consumer of the mental health system who had just become trained as a Certified Recovery Specialist to help assist her peers in their self-determined recovery goals. However, the peer support role was very new in southern Indiana in 2012 and no mental health provider were hiring. So, this determined woman discovered that Indiana division of mental health and addiction were offering the opportunity to apply for Consumer operated business grants to start their own services as nonprofits that could be up to 50, 000 in grant amount if awarded. This determined woman taught herself how to write a grant and how to start up a nonprofit from scratch. She submitted the proposal not expecting to be chosen but was selected among 8 total consumers in the state of Indiana. She wanted to create a safe place for those with mental health, addiction and trauma to offer peer support services and recovery group activities and support services that would cater to the specific needs of the community. Our second grant in 2014 was to implement our program Pathways to HOPE, an educational recovery support group for adults that is a strength approach to recovery. We were the first peer run recovery center to open in this part of southern indiana in 2015 as part of our third grant from Indiana division of mental health and addiction being one out of 5 recovery centers to receive the grant provision. We opened in august 2015 through June 2016 renting from New Albany housing authorities. Our mission is to help those with a mental health diagnosis or those struggling with life issues to find HOPE and to know that recovery is possible.
