"Doula support significantly improves birth outcomes, including a 39% to 52.9% reduction in cesarean delivery rates, a 48% reduction in labor induction, and increased breastfeeding success. Research indicates doulas reduce the risk of postpartum depression by over 50%, increase patient satisfaction, and significantly lower preterm birth rates. " -American College of Obstetrics and Gyncology
Midwives at home are one of the few comparisons I can make for a good doula, but in my experience, a doula still provides more hands on, physical support and comfort measures. Midwives operate as medical professionals and though they may offer some advice for positioning and intervention in labor, they tend to take care of needs like a nurse or doctor, from cervical checks to blood pressure.
Doulas in any setting, hospital or home, offer a unique and personal experience which can impact the chances of a more successful labor, or one in which you feel confident and calm in your choices, whatever those may be.
