Guess who's getting certified in somatic therapy for complex trauma? Yep. Me. Back to homework.

The short version of why: trauma doesn't only live in your memories. It shows up in your tight jaw, your shoulders up by your ears, the stomach that drops for no reason, the "why can't I just relax" feeling. Talking about it helps. Working with it where it actually lives in your body helps more.

So I'm adding more body-based tools to the EMDR and Brainspotting work I already do. Same therapist, bigger toolbox.

Four new self-pay clients and an intensive booked, all this week.

Not from luck, and not from insurance panels. From five things I set up on purpose and keep working: my Psychology Today profile, my Google Business Profile, my website's SEO, Facebook, and real referral relationships in my community.

When I went cash-pay, I heard a lot of "you'll lose your caseload." I didn't. I just had to learn to market differently, and most of us were never taught how. Same with intensives. People do pay for them when you build and explain them well.

So I'm starting a waitlist for 1:1 consulting for therapists who want to build or move to a self-pay practice. We'll look at your actual profiles, your referral sources, and what's keeping your phone quiet.

Comment "WAITLIST" or DM me and I'll add you.

Trainings are up now at jfullertherapy.com/trainings.

The unknown is what scares most people off intensives β€” so let's demystify it. It's not hours of nonstop crying. It's paced, humane, and built around you: grounding, deep work, breaks, integration. You're met with care the whole way through. Most people leave lighter than they've felt in years.

You can do years of talk therapy and still feel stuck. Here's why β€” and what actually moves it. πŸ‘‡

Trauma isn't a mindset or a willpower problem. It's a physical state in the brain: the alarm (the amygdala) gets stuck ON, the part that would calm it goes offline, and the memory never gets filed as "over." So the body keeps reacting like the danger is still here.

EMDR and Brainspotting work because they go at the brain, not the story. They help it finish processing what got stuck β€” fast, and without you having to relive every detail out loud.

Swipe through for the short version of how both work.

If you've done all the talking and you're still stuck, an intensive can do in days what weekly therapy stretches over months.

Last week I presented for the ECU School of Social Work's 2026-27 Lecture Series β€” "Beyond Weekly Therapy: The Clinical Benefits of EMDR and Brainspotting Intensives" β€” to a great group of both students and professionals working in the field.

I really enjoyed this one. Talking through why the intensive model works β€” and where it fits for clients the standard weekly hour just doesn't serve well β€” and then getting good, pointed questions back is my favorite kind of session. Thanks to ECU SSW for having me, and to everyone who logged on.

The series runs through spring with new topics and presenters each month, and each session offers 2 contact hours of continuing education. If you're a professional looking to stack up hours, you can register for any of the upcoming dates here: https://ecu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2t3yjqJe7sQvWpE

And I'll be back at it later this winter β€” presenting for ECU's Brody School of Medicine. More on that soon.

One of the quiet frustrations of weekly therapy: getting right to the edge of something real, then hearing "we're at time." Brainspotting especially needs space β€” it moves at your own pace, not the clock's. The intensive format finally gives that depth somewhere to go.

So many people blame themselves for reactions they can't think their way out of β€” the anxiety that shows up "for no reason," the tension that won't release. Your body isn't betraying you. It's protecting you, using an old map. Healing means updating the map, and that happens in the body, not just the conversation.

The sticker price of an intensive can look big β€” until you compare it to six months of weekly sessions, plus the cost of carrying the same pain for those six months. Intensives aren't a luxury version of therapy. They're a format that respects that momentum matters. For the right person, they're actually the efficient choice.

People are often surprised by how un-dramatic it feels. There's no reliving your worst day out loud. You focus, you notice, and your brain does the sorting it hasn't had space to do. Some of the deepest sessions look, from the outside, almost still.
