Juneteenth…also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is celebrated on June 19th. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. This day represents a long-awaited freedom and the beginning of a new chapter for African Americans.
