The last week of school is one of the hardest weeks of the year for kids...
And most parents don't realize it's happening 🦋
While everyone around them is celebrating summer, a lot of kids are quietly carrying something heavy...
saying goodbye to a teacher they love, worrying about who their new teacher will be next year, leaving the routine and the classroom and the friends that made them feel safe.
That's not excitement, it's grief. And it's completely normal!
Here's what we know from years of teaching kids in Twin Cities schools and classrooms:
Change is hard for children's developing brains, even good change, because their nervous systems are wired for predictability and routine.
When that routine ends, even for something as joyful as summer, their brain registers it as a threat.
The meltdowns this week? The clinginess? The big emotions over small things?
Good news, that's not bad behavior, it's biology 🧠
The butterfly lifecycle is one of our favorite frameworks for helping kids understand transition:
🐛 Caterpillar = how i started this year
🫘 Chrysalis = the challenges and new experiences I grew from in-between
🦋 Butterfly = who I'm becoming!
When children have language for what they're feeling, and tools to move through it, everything changes.
This is the work we do every single week inside Mindful Movement Kids™
A small-group, trauma-informed kids yoga and mindfulness class where children learn to regulate big emotions, build real confidence, and feel genuinely seen! In a space designed just for them.
