⚡ Electric vehicle (EV) fires present different challenges than conventional vehicle fires.
Unlike a typical gasoline-powered vehicle fire, an EV fire may involve a lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway. Even after visible flames are knocked down, damaged battery cells can continue generating heat and may reignite hours—or in some cases even days—later.
Research shows that water from a standard handline remains the primary suppression tool. Firefighters should first extinguish the passenger compartment fire, assess for battery involvement, protect exposures, and continue monitoring for possible re-ignition.
Every incident is different. While many conventional vehicle fires can often be controlled within minutes, an EV fire involving the battery may require significantly longer operations, including extended cooling, monitoring, and scene management before the incident can be safely terminated.
