Beginning Grounding: Finding Your Center

Grounding is a simple practice of reconnecting with the present moment, your body, and the world around you. In metaphysical practices, grounding is often used before meditation, tarot, energy work, ritual, or spiritual practices. From a mental wellness perspective, grounding can also be a helpful way to slow down, redirect attention, and create a sense of stability when emotions or thoughts feel overwhelming.

You don't need special tools or experience to begin grounding. Start by simply noticing where you are.

🌿 A Simple Grounding Practice

Find a comfortable place to sit or stand. Place both feet firmly on the floor if you can.

Take a slow breath in through your nose and gently breathe out. Don't worry about making your breathing perfect. Simply notice it.

Now bring your attention to your surroundings.

**Name:**

* 5 things you can see
* 4 things you can physically feel
* 3 things you can hear
* 2 things you can smell
* 1 thing you can taste

As you do this, remind yourself:

“I am here. I am safe in this moment. I can take things one moment at a time.”

🌙 Grounding in Metaphysical Practice

Many people incorporate grounding into their spiritual routines by imagining roots extending from their feet into the earth. With each breath, imagine yourself becoming more connected, steady, and supported.

You might visualize drawing calm, steady energy upward from the earth while releasing tension downward.

You can also use physical objects that help you feel connected to the earth, such as a stone, crystal, piece of wood, or another meaningful object. The object itself doesn't have to have any particular power—what matters is the meaning and intention you give it.

🧠 Grounding for Mental Wellness

Grounding can help bring your attention away from racing thoughts and back toward what is happening right now. It can be especially useful when you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally activated, or disconnected from your surroundings.

Grounding isn't about making difficult feelings disappear. Instead, it's about creating enough space to notice those feelings without allowing them to completely take over.

Try asking yourself:

“What do I need right now?”

Maybe the answer is a drink of water, a few quiet minutes, a walk outside, music, a comforting object, or simply permission to pause.

🌱 Start Small

Grounding doesn't have to be a 30-minute meditation or elaborate ritual. Even 30 seconds of intentionally noticing your feet on the floor and taking a few slow breaths can become a meaningful practice.

The more often you practice grounding when you're already feeling calm, the easier it may be to remember the technique when you need it.

Ground yourself. Breathe. Notice. Return to the present.

And remember: grounding practices can complement mental-health care, but they aren't a replacement for professional support when you need it.

Blessed Be ~Shelly

Happy Hump Day! 🐪

You made it to Wednesday — the top of the hill. From here, the weekend is closer than the Monday you started with.

If this week has felt like a climb, that's okay. Getting halfway is still forward. Take a breath, unclench that jaw, and give yourself a little credit for showing up.

A small midweek reset can go a long way:
🌿 Step outside for a few minutes
🌿 Drink some water
🌿 Text (or call) someone who makes you smile
🌿 Do one thing at your own pace today

You don't have to power through — you just have to keep going gently.

Here's to the downhill stretch ahead. 💛

Angelus proudly partners with Mohawk School District to bring our Compass counseling program right into the school building — Our licensed therapists are on-site, so students can get support without missing excessive class time, needing to leave school and having to find a ride to an appointment.

As a new school year approaches, here's the best part: 🔕 you don't have to wait until the first bell to start.

🎈 Option 1: Begin outpatient counseling now at our New Castle or Hermitage office. Once the school year begins, your student's care can transition seamlessly to school-based sessions at Mohawk — no restart, no gap in support.

📃Option 2: Get everything set up now — insurance verified, intake complete — so you're ready to start the moment the school year begins.

Compass sessions are billed through insurance just like a regular visit, and everything shared stays private.

Ready to take the first step? Call 724-654-9555 or visit https://angelustherapeuticservices.com/our-services/school-based/mohawk/ to get started today.

Your body keeps track of a lot. When stress builds, it often shows up physically before you have words for it — a tight chest, a clenched jaw, that restless feeling you can't quite name.

Somatic tools work with the body instead of around it. They're small, simple, and available to you anywhere.

Here are six places to start:

🌿 Breathe — deep belly breaths, a long exhale, or a sigh out loud
🌿 Movement — stretch slowly, rock side to side, walk barefoot
🌿 Sound — hum, play calming music, let yourself sigh
🌿 Touch — hold a warm mug, use a weighted blanket, place a hand on your heart
🌿 Connection — pet your dog, call someone safe, ask for a hug
🌿 Visualisation — picture a safe place, a calming colour, somewhere in nature

You don't need all six. Try one and notice what shifts.

Save this for the next time your body needs a little help feeling safe.
