Your thoughts are powerful, but they are not always facts. 🧠

When anxiety or overthinking takes over, it can feel like your thoughts are pulling you away from the present moment.

In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we learn that thoughts are like waves in the ocean. 🌊 We may not be able to control when they appear or how strong they feel, but we can learn to observe them without being pulled under.

You are not every thought you have. You are the person noticing them.

What thought do you find yourself getting stuck on most often?

📱 Every parent eventually faces this question:

“When is the right time for my child to have social media?”

There is no perfect answer. Parenting decisions often require looking at your child’s age, maturity, emotional well-being, and social environment.

Evidence-based parenting is not about following rigid rules. It’s about understanding your child and making thoughtful decisions that support their mental health. 🤍

👉 What age do you think is appropriate for kids to have social media?

You might be exhausted because you’re always the one everyone depends on. 💭

The person who says yes.
The person who fixes problems.
The person who carries everyone else’s emotions.

Over time, constantly putting others first can lead to chronic stress and emotional burnout.

Creating boundaries isn’t about caring less. It’s about protecting your mental health while maintaining healthier relationships. 🤍

What’s one boundary you’re working on right now?

"We've tried everything... and nothing seems to work." 💛

Many parents come to us feeling this way.

The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting. Every child has their own temperament, emotions, and experiences. That's why the most effective parenting strategies begin with understanding the unique child behind the behavior.

Sometimes, a different perspective can make all the difference.

Has there ever been a parenting moment that changed the way you understood your child? We'd love to hear your experience. 🤍

Some conversations are worth revisiting. 🤍

We're proud to be part of the Westport community and to support individuals and families throughout every stage of life.

A while back, Dr. Amanda Volper sat down with Westport Moms to talk about something deeply personal: her own experience with postpartum anxiety, the importance of recognizing perinatal mental health concerns, and why asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Although this interview was published in 2024, its message is just as meaningful today. We hope it continues to remind parents that they don't have to navigate these challenges alone.

If you're in Westport or Fairfield County, what mental health topic would you like our psychologists to talk about next? 💬

Thank you, , for helping create space for conversations that matter.

Mom to three little ones, Amanda moved to Westport three years ago, but grew up coming here all her life to visit family! Amanda is the co-founder of City Psychology Center (CPC), a clinical psychology practice with offices in New York City and Westport. CPC specializes in cognitive behavioral thera...

The most exhausted people aren't always the busiest. 🪫

Sometimes they're the ones everyone depends on.

Emotional burnout doesn't always come from long work hours. It can come from constantly being available, solving problems, supporting others, and feeling like there's never a moment to fully recharge.

If you've been feeling drained lately, this Reel explains four small, evidence-based ways to start breaking that cycle. 🤍

🤝 Save this for the days when you're running on empty.

Your brain is not trying to make things harder. It’s trying to protect you. 🧠

But sometimes that protection looks like:

💭 Replaying a conversation over and over
💭 Preparing for every possible outcome
💭 Feeling stuck in thoughts you can’t turn off

When emotions feel overwhelming, it can feel like your thoughts are moving faster than you can slow them down.

One grounding strategy some people use is the rubber band technique. The goal is not to hurt yourself, but to use a safe physical sensation as a reminder to reconnect with the present moment.

By shifting your attention away from the spiral and toward what is happening right now, you may create enough space to respond instead of react. 🌱

This strategy may not be helpful for everyone, and different people find different grounding tools that work for them.

When you notice yourself starting to spiral, what usually happens first?

A. I replay the past
B. I worry about the future
C. I assume the worst
D. Something else

Many parents notice feeling more drained during holidays, even when the day is supposed to feel “fun.” 🎆

Your patience feels shorter, your energy runs lower, and small things start to feel overwhelming.

You “should” be doing some A+ parenting, it’s a holiday!

But “should” do not = reality.

What many of us fail to remember is the way in which holidays can lead to emotional overload with all their stimulation. This then impacts our patience and emotional bandwidth.

Let go of the “should” this 4th of July. Instead, focus on taking care of yourself so that you can parent with more patience.

Small resets can help:
🤍 step away for a moment
🤍 take a few slow breaths
🤍 give yourself a quiet pause before responding 🤍 give yourself the gift of downtime
