June 1 marks the official start of National CPR and AED Awareness Week. This year's national theme is 'It Starts With You' because a siren cannot beat a stopped heart.

When sudden cardiac arrest strikes, the clock begins ticking immediately. Brain damage can start in as little as four minutes, and a person's chance of survival drops by up to 10 percent with every single minute that passes without help. As an NYC Paramedic, I can tell you that the most important link in the chain of survival isn't the ambulance crew; it is the bystander who is already on the scene. Performing immediate CPR can double or even triple a loved one's chance of recovery. This week is a nationwide reminder that the power to save a life does not require a medical degree. It just requires the willingness to learn and the confidence to step forward.
