Decoding a High-Risk Kidney Transplant Case
Every transplant case is unique, but some come with multiple complexities that truly test surgical expertise and teamwork.
In this case, several factors added to the challenge:
•An informal term often used to describe a high-risk, complex case where multiple clinical and anatomical challenges coexist.
• Atherosclerotic recipient artery: The presence of plaque made the artery rigid and narrowed, increasing the difficulty of creating a secure vascular connection and ensuring adequate blood flow.
• Multiple donor renal arteries and veins: Instead of the usual single artery and vein, the donor kidney had multiple vessels, requiring careful reconstruction and precise anastomosis.
• Limited operative space: Restricted surgical field made placement of the graft and suturing technically demanding.
• High BMI: Increased body mass added complexity due to reduced accessibility, longer operative time, and higher risk of complications.
