Winter caregiving tips.

Winter caregiving tips.

Winter’s shorter days and indoor time can increase confusion for people with dementia. Keeping routines steady and maintaining consistent lighting throughout the home can help support a sense of orientation and familiarity during shorter days.

Predictable daily rhythms help reduce anxiety and support a sense of familiarity.
→ Creating warm, calming environments can further support comfort during winter months.
→ Consider opening blinds early in the day, using warm but bright indoor lights in the evening, and minimizing shadows that may cause distress.
→ Indoor activities such as music listening, simple stretching, or looking through familiar photo albums can help maintain engagement and reduce restlessness.

Adapting spaces for safety and comfort can also make a meaningful difference. Keeping walkways clear, ensuring rooms are heated to a comfortable temperature, and offering soft blankets or familiar objects can increase security and well-being throughout the season.
