💙 Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month | Part 2: Averie’s Story

When Averie was just 3 years old, a swollen toe that wouldn’t heal led to a life-changing diagnosis: juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

What followed were doctor visits, difficult treatments, insurance battles, tears, courage, and countless moments of hope. Through it all, Averie showed incredible strength—earning the nickname “Averie Bravery” from her family.

Today, thanks to early diagnosis, expert care, advances in treatment, and unwavering support, Averie is thriving. She’s dancing, running, acting, making friends, and living life to the fullest. As her mom shares, “Juvenile arthritis is part of our story, but it does not define her.”

Every summer, the spirit of the holidays arrives a little early at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. "Scottie's Christmas in July" was launched by one of our amazing Yale New Haven Hospital families to bring comfort, joy, and smiles to young patients in honor of a dear friend, Scottie, a remarkable 16-year-old who courageously battled cancer and was treated at YNHCH. Year after year, this family's kindness reminds our patients and families that they are surrounded by a community that cares. Thank you for helping make childhood a little brighter, even on the most difficult days!

Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital has unveiled its new Children’s Crisis Intervention Center, a dedicated behavioral health treatment space within the Children’s Emergency Department. Opening in August, the Center will provide 24/7 specialized care in a calm, therapeutic environment for children experiencing mental health crises, helping connect young patients and families with the support they need, when they need it most. This milestone reflects a powerful collaboration among Yale New Haven Health, Yale New Haven Hospital, the Yale Child Study Center, CT Department of Children and Families, the Connecticut Department of Public Health and community partners, all united by a shared commitment to expanding access to timely, compassionate behavioral health care for children and adolescents. Yale New Haven Health would like to also give a special thanks to Howard Sovronsky, Connecticut Behavioral Health Advocate, U.S. Congresswoman Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Connecticut State Comptroller Sean Scanlon, State Senator Ceci Maher and State Representative Toni Walker.

Help us fill the Toy Closets! 🧸

A hospital stay can be scary and lonely for a child. The goal of the Toy Closet Program is to provide each pediatric patient with an age- appropriate toy or small gift when they are discharged from Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. Toys are given out 365 days a year – so we need to keep the closets stocked. Last year the Toy Closet Program supplied more than 400,000 toys to locations in our hospitals, Emergency Departments and Pediatric Specialty Centers from Old Saybrook to Greenwich. Your donations help make that possible. Toy donations may be accepted via in-person drop-offs at the hospital.

Toys may also be ordered from a suggested wish list and will be
shipped directly to the Toy Closet. Monetary donations are also
