When working with families impacted by substance use, our word choices are important. Many words carry stigma with them and can perpetuate negative stereotypes of people with substance use disorders. Even if the intent is not to cause harm, it is helpful to remember that the impact of stigmatizing words can be harmful. Take a look at the chart below for guidance on respectful word choices.
