Thanks to all who came out this past Sunday to celebrate the opening of our new Branford office! We loved seeing and visiting with WHA midwives past and present, staff, community partners, patients and families. We couldn’t do what we do (nor would we want to!) without all of you!

Yesterday marked the end of an era, both at WHA and on the labor and birth floor at Yale New Haven Hospital. After 18 years on L&B and 9 years at WHA, we bid a bittersweet, yet fond farewell to DeMarcus!

In 2017, after the passing of WHA founder Deb Cibelli, DeMarcus reached out to WHA about joining our team. The practice was much smaller then, and struggling in the wake of such a profound loss. DeMarcus lifted our hearts with his infusion of joy and confidence, and has continued to do so ever since.

Often referred to as “the face of labor and birth,” DeMarcus holds a special place in the hearts of many, staff and patients alike. We at WHA consider ourselves beyond lucky that he chose to share his infectious spirit, his brilliance with humans, his versatile skills, and his unwavering dedication with us over these past 9 years.

Thank you DeMarcus for being a part of WHA. We will miss you deeply, but are so excited for you as you take this next step! Now, go infuse your next team with love and laughter! They are so fortunate to have you. 💜

2024 Triple Aim Best Practices Recognition

The 2024 Triple Aim Best Practice designation highlights exceptional performance among maternity care practices participating in the ACNM Benchmarking Project. This recognition reflects alignment with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s “Triple Aim” framework: improving the patient experience, enhancing population health, and reducing the cost of care.

To qualify for this designation, practices met or exceeded the following key performance benchmarks:
- Primary Cesarean Birth Rate: Below 23.9%
- Preterm Birth Rate: Below 11.4%
- Exclusive Breastfeeding in the First 48 Hours: Above 81%
- Reporting of Fiscal Outcomes: Required for full participation

Out of 181 participating practices in 2024, 40 were recognized as Triple Aim Best Practices, demonstrating a strong commitment to clinical excellence, patient-centered care, and sustainable outcomes.

National Midwifery Week takes place annually during the first full week of October, and was created by to celebrate and recognize midwives and midwife-led care.

This week at WHA Midwives, we’re celebrating the strength, compassion, and teamwork that define our profession — and the wonderful people who make this care possible.

This season, we’re excited to welcome a few experienced and beloved colleagues to our team, so that we may continue to care for you as we care for ourselves. They are not only seasoned providers, but also nursing and midwifery faculty, as well as longtime friends.

Together, our team is well equipped to continue providing relationship-based, thoughtful, and deeply personal care — all while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

We look forward to introducing you to these wonderful humans!

Here’s to midwives caring for families — and for each other. 💜

Happy Midwifery Week!

As the definitive resource for menopause and other midlife healthcare issues, developed a competency examination in 2002 to set the standards for menopause practice and assist patients in locating clinicians who could provide optimal menopause-related healthcare. Those who pass the examination earn the credential The Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP).

Congratulations to WHA’s own Laura Sundstrom, CNM, FACNM and now MSCP(!) on earning this credential.

In addition to Laura, there are many providers ready and willing to talk all things and with you! Thank you, as always, for choosing us for your care. 💜
