Some people don’t qualify for joint replacement surgeries because of their weight, while others experience complications as a result of it. But weight loss medications are helping to change that. Drs. Lee Rubin and Dan Wiznia explain how GLP-1s are changing the game for patients who might otherwise not qualify for joint replacement surgery.

More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States have some type of disability as of 2026, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A Yale study published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science found that patients with disabilities are almost entirely unrepresented in orthopedic research.

"When we look at how health care disparities are studied, we see a lot of excellent work tracking how race or insurance status affects patient outcomes," says David Frumberg, MD, an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation and the principal investigator of the study. "But disability is routinely left out of the equation. Physicians typically treat disabilities as a medical condition to be managed rather than a distinct demographic that faces systemic barriers."

Vascular necrosis is "a neglected disease," Yale Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation's Daniel Wiznia, MD, tells Becker's Spine Review in an interview out this week – but Yale Medicine's unique approach helps to preserve patients' joints, rather than just wait to replace them.

"If I told you I had a very low-risk therapy that could drastically reduce the risk of your hip collapsing, you’d be very interested in that," Dr. Wiznia says.

For many patients diagnosed with avascular necrosis, the treatment pathway begins with a troubling reality. The disease is often discovered after damage has already started.

Blood supply to the bone becomes compromised. Bone tissue begins to die. Over time, the joint weakens, collapses and, for many patients, eventually requires replacement. The conversation that follows is frequently less about preserving the joint than preparing for its eventual failure.

Daniel Wiznia, MD, believes that paradigm has persisted for far too long. Read more from his interview with Becker's Spine Review.

For millions of people living with osteoarthritis, daily life can involve a frustrating cycle of pain and stiffness. While current treatments like over-the-counter medications or steroid injections can temporarily dull the ache, they do not stop the joint from deteriorating.

A Yale study published in the journal Bioactive Materials found that the medication lacosamide acts as a highly effective, dual-purpose treatment that relieves joint pain and reverses cartilage damage in osteoarthritis, especially when a specialized hydrogel delivers the drug directly into the joint.
