On a low FODMAP diet and struggling to get in fruit as a result? It is important to still get in enough fruit that will provide essential fiber and vitamins and minerals to keep your gut healthy while you are on a restrictive diet.

Try these swaps out! 👉🏻

I also recommend using Monash Uni Low FODMAP Diet app and website for guidance on the low FODMAP diet. You can see what serving sizes keep you low FODMAP, recipes, and tons of other information.

When your digestive health improves, your life will change!

I remember spending summers being anxious over events because I didn’t have control over the food that would be there. However, because I was so restricted I would end up over-indulging (like eating every dessert at a party even ones I didn’t really want) and then drinking to calm down the anxiety. And of course the next day and for even days after I would feel terrible!

You don’t have to live your life like this! When you finally improve your gut health you can finally enjoy life (and food!) again.

I’ve been there and I want to help you learn to trust your body again.
Don’t let summer go by with you feeling miserable!

Healing your gut can mean enjoying a pizza on the beach on a Wednesday night just because. 🍕

No more avoiding gluten and dairy, making excuses to stay home because you don’t know if there is an accessible bathroom, or having anxiety because you are going to an event and you are only eating 5 safe foods.

Yes, this is possible and I have personally experienced this drastic improvement in my life.

There is always a strong focus on foods to avoid and include for digestive health, but one of the most important pieces often gets missed…
HOW you eat your meals!

Stress negatively impacts digestion. If you are stressed, distracted, or eating meals on the go then you are not giving your body a chance to digest food properly.

To reduce stress at meal time:

🔹Remove all distractions especially screens. Social media, watching the news, etc can all increase anxiety/stress without you even realizing it.
🔹Take a few deep breaths before meals. This doesn’t take long and can be done even during a busy day!
🔹Eat feel good foods and what your body desires instead of just what you think you should have.
🔹Slow down while eating meals. Give yourself enough time when you can and make sure you sit down to eat.

You can improve your gut health with making nutrition changes and managing stress!

This is not the prettiest topic but… the Bristol stool chart is a common tool that we use in the digestive health world. You may be moving your bowels every day, but what your 💩 looks like can tell you a whole lot more.

Knowing this can give us information about foods that we can include to help you have healthier, more complete bowel movements that are comfortable.
This is what we use to determine what kinds of fiber you may need to add more or less of.

It’s probably not the gluten… Let’s talk about it!

Many of my clients come to me with self diagnosed gluten intolerance. They notice when they eat foods that include gluten such as bread, pasta, or other snack foods that they feel bloated, experience abdominal pain, or sometimes even have diarrhea.

But did you know that another component that is in wheat is often to blame.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat that gives these products their elasticity. If you have celiac disease you have to strictly avoid gluten because your body will create an inflammatory response when it is consumed, which over time can damage your intestines. Some people also have less severe reactions to this that may be gluten intolerant.

But… wheat also is high in something called fructans. Fructans are a high FODMAP carbohydrate part of wheat that many with digestive issues may be sensitive to. Fructans are digested quickly and absorbed poorly and in sensitive individuals may cause abdominal pain, bloating, and/or diarrhea.

So if you think you are intolerant to gluten, I invite you to do this test. Try sourdough bread as this still is high in gluten, but is lower in fructans (FODMAP). If you tolerate this better you may have a FODMAP intolerance instead of gluten, which is more common.

Struggling with food intolerances and feel unsure of what to even eat?

I finished my 6th half marathon on Sunday and honestly my gut did not feel the best by the end of the race. I could have fueled better and with kids waking up while I was getting ready, I didn’t get the time I needed to relax before. I made it through, but tried to focus on hydration and nutrition after the race even though I was not feeling hungry.

Digestive issues are common in runners and these issues can unfortunately come up during runs and races. How you fuel before, during, and after can make a big difference in preventing symptoms.

We help runners with a fueling strategy that can help you get through races with less digestive symptoms and improve performance.
