It’s hard to believe summer break is ending and students are heading back to class. This back-to-school transition can be a stressful time for children and their parents. However, there are steps caregivers can take ahead of the start of the school year to make it a little easier.

“Learning in school is essential to our children’s health and development. Marissa’s journey with cardiovascular disease will change the way you think about cholesterol. While many of us have had our traditional “good” and “bad” cholesterol checked through standard blood work, many cardiologists with Yale New Haven Health’s Heart and Vascular Center are encouraging patients to talk with their providers about a test for a specific hereditary lipoprotein known as Lp(a). It’s not typically measured as part of most standard lipid panels, but high levels of Lp(a) can increase one’s risk for cardiovascular disease. When Theo's parents learned at a 16-week ultrasound that he would be born with a cleft, they were understandably terrified. But they quickly found comfort in the support of Yale New Haven Children's Hospital's Craniofacial team. "From day one, we felt like we had a team behind us and working with us to make sure Theo had the best care possible," they shared. Today, the steri-strips, nose conformers and NAM treatments feel like a distant memory. Theo is now a thriving 3-year-old who is fluent in two languages, knows his ABCs, can spell his name, and count to 10. "All we think of now is the happy and healthy little boy that fills our days with laughter and joy. We could not be prouder of our little guy." 💙

Joe O’Connell is a Connecticut State Trooper nearing retirement who admits that, for most of his life, “I thought I was invincible.”

But after Joe suffered a stroke last year, it set in motion a series of tests and procedures that changed his perspective.

O’Connell’s unexpected health journey would eventually lead him to Yale New Haven Hospital's Heart and Vascular Center and a cardiac surgeon practicing one of the most advanced coronary artery bypass procedures in the world.

Kelsey Gray, MD, director of cardiothoracic transplant at YNHH’s Heart and Vascular Center and an assistant professor of cardiac surgery at Yale School of Medicine, is one of only about 15 surgeons in the world currently capable of performing TECAB, or totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass.
