A $1 million gift from Dr. John R. Patrick and Mrs. Joanne Patrick will help strengthen nursing across Northwell Health's hospitals in Connecticut and the Hudson Valley. 💙

The gift will support nursing education, including specialty certifications and hands-on training, leadership development and preparation for achieving Magnet Recognition, the nation’s highest honor for nursing quality and patient care.

A $1 million gift from Dr. John R. Patrick and Mrs. Joanne Patrick will help strengthen nursing across Northwell Health’s hospitals in Connecticut and the Hudson Valley. 💙

The gift will support nursing education, leadership development and preparation for Magnet Recognition, the nation’s highest honor for nursing quality and patient care. Funding will help nurses pursue continuing education and specialty certifications, participate in hands-on training and lead projects that improve care for patients and families.

The Patricks’ support is deeply personal. Mrs. Patrick was a registered nurse, and their daughter, Tracy Savitz, DNP, has experience evaluating Magnet programs.

“Joanne and I have seen firsthand the impact nurses have on patients, families and communities,” Dr. Patrick says. “We’re proud to stand behind the nurses who care for patients and families across the region.”

“Pursuing Magnet status puts a hospital and the nursing department under a microscope. This reflects a fortitude that elevates nurses to exceptional status,” Mrs. Patrick says.

Savitz says, “Magnet hospitals foster a culture of teamwork and trust, helping nurses consistently deliver patient-centered care and have fulfilling careers.”

“On behalf of our nursing team, we are deeply grateful to John, Joanne and Tracy for believing in our nurses and supporting us in taking this important step toward Magnet Recognition,” says Launette Woolforde, EdD, DNP, RN, EVP, chief nursing officer for Northwell. “Their commitment is remarkable and will help us continue to build a culture where nurses are valued, respected and empowered to provide outstanding care.”

Please help us thank the Patrick family for investing in our nurses and shaping the future of care across our region. 👏🩺

Meet Josephine Pedone of the Nicholas Pedone Foundation. After losing her 7-year-old son, Nicholas, to neuroblastoma, Josephine and her family created the Nicholas Pedone Foundation to honor Nicholas’ memory and bring smiles to children fighting cancer. Thanks to the Pedone Family’s generosity, we recently welcomed Quinny to Cohen Children's Medical Center! 🐶 ❤️ Quinny is Cohen Children’s newest facility dog, and he is already spreading endless smiles and comfort to our hematology and oncology patients, their families, and our staff.

At age 15, Peter Dejana immigrated to the United States from Italy, settling in Port Washington, NY, which he called home for nearly 70 years. Through the creation of the Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation, he supported initiatives dedicated to enhancing the lives of local residents.

Later in life, Peter began showing signs of cognitive decline, consistent with a neurodegenerative condition similar to Alzheimer’s disease. Until his death in 2024, Peter was under the care of Dr. Luca Giliberto, associate professor and physician-scientist within the Institute of Molecular Medicine at The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. 🔬

Inspired by the care Peter received, the Dejana family donated $5 million to support Dr. Gilberto and his research partner, Dr. Cristina D’Abramo. Their innovative research enables discoveries that could change the future for patients and families facing these complex conditions.
