NASCAR driver Kyle Busch’s death has raised tough questions about bacterial pneumonia, a condition that is often preventable.
Dr. Kristopher McDonough, critical care pulmonologist, stresses that the pneumonia vaccine (often just one dose for life) can stop severe illness, especially for adults over 50 or anyone with conditions like COPD, asthma, diabetes or weakened immunity.
He warns not to ignore symptoms. Quick treatment with antibiotics can be lifesaving, and flu shots also play a major role in preventing pneumonia.
“Don’t try to just shake it off,” Dr. McDonough says. “Take symptoms seriously. Early care saves lives.”
