NASCAR driver Kyle Busch’s death has raised tough questions about bacterial pneumonia, a condition that is often preventable.

Dr. Kristopher McDonough, critical care pulmonologist, stresses that the pneumonia vaccine (often just one dose for life) can stop severe illness, especially for adults over 50 or anyone with conditions like COPD, asthma, diabetes or weakened immunity.

He warns not to ignore symptoms. Quick treatment with antibiotics can be lifesaving, and flu shots also play a major role in preventing pneumonia.

“Don’t try to just shake it off,” Dr. McDonough says. “Take symptoms seriously. Early care saves lives.”

The Silver Cross Foundation is excited to share that it has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Caesars Foundation to aid in the “OR of the Future” initiative at Silver Cross Hospital. This ambitious campaign represents an $8.5 million commitment to upgrade and modernize all 11 operating rooms with cutting-edge technology, enhanced patient safety measures, and state-of-the-art surgical design.

Silver Cross conducts nearly 12,000 surgeries annually, serving patients in Will, Grundy, and southwest Cook counties with nationally recognized excellence. However, the hospital’s operating rooms, constructed 14 years ago, were designed for a different medical landscape. The latest advancements in surgical technology and patient care necessitate updated facilities that promote precision, efficiency, safety, and an improved patient experience.

A brush fire that began outside the hospital Serenity Garden about 4 p.m. has been fully extinguished, and we’re relieved to report that there were no injuries – and no danger to patients or staff. As a result of the fire, our air handler intake system sensed smoke, which triggered smoke alarms in various portions of the hospital and Pavilion A and B.

The shrubs near the west end by the stairwell sustained damage, along with a section of the fence in that area. We’ll be assessing those fully for replacement and repair.

The New Lenox Fire Department responded promptly and remains on hand to ensure the fire doesn’t reignite due to the breeze and dry weather conditions.
