When a Child’s Behavior Is Saying, “I Need Help” 💙
Children don’t always have the words to say, “I’m struggling.” Sometimes, they communicate through changes in their behavior, emotions, or everyday routines.
As parents and caregivers, it’s important to remember that a child who is acting differently may not simply be “acting out.” Their behavior may be their way of asking for help.
Some signs to pay attention to include:
• Becoming unusually withdrawn, quiet, or isolated
• Frequent anger, irritability, or emotional outbursts
• Sudden changes in sleep — sleeping much more or much less
• Changes in appetite or eating habits
• Losing interest in activities they normally enjoy
• Increased difficulty concentrating at home or school
• A noticeable drop in school performance
• Refusing or becoming increasingly anxious about going to school
• New fears, worries, or frequent reassurance-seeking
• Regression in behaviors they had previously outgrown
• Changes in friendships or avoiding social situations
• Increased conflict with parents, siblings, teachers, or peers
• Frequent physical complaints such as headaches or stomachaches without an obvious cause
• Significant changes in daily routines or self-care
One change by itself doesn't necessarily mean a child needs therapy. But when changes are persistent, significant, or affecting a child's ability to function at home, school, or with others, it may be time to reach out.
At Ritual Relational Therapy, children and families can find a supportive space to better understand what is happening beneath the behavior. We provide marriage, family, and individual therapy and uses evidence-based approaches, including CBT, family/marital therapy, DBT, and trauma-focused approaches. Areas of focus include Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Most importantly, you don't have to wait until a child is in crisis to ask for help.
Sometimes the most important thing a parent can say is:
“I see that you're having a hard time. You don't have to handle this alone. I'm here, and we're going to get help together.” ❤️
