There’s no better reminder of why hands-on learning matters than Haley’s story.

Haley recently participated in our Junior Nursing Academy, where she gained valuable healthcare skills, including how to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Just days after completing the program, those lessons were put to the test in an unexpected way.

When her cat, Nibby, began choking, Haley stayed calm, remembered what she had learned, and successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver—saving Nibby’s life!

We are incredibly proud of Haley for thinking quickly, putting her training into action, and making a real difference. Stories like this remind us that skills like this have an impact far beyond the classroom.

We're proud to share that WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital has been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as one of only 183 hospitals nationwide to receive 5-star ratings for both nurse and physician communication based on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) patient experience data. CMS evaluates physician communication based on whether doctors explained information clearly, listened carefully, and treated patients with courtesy and respect. Nurse communication ratings reflect patients' experiences with nurses explaining care, listening attentively, and treating patients with dignity and compassion.
This recognition reflects what matters most to us: listening to our patients, communicating with compassion, and providing exceptional care close to home.

The future of healthcare is bright!

Recently, Wetzel County Hospital had the pleasure of hosting our Junior Nursing Academy for a wonderful group of middle school students. Over the course of three days, these students explored a variety of healthcare careers, learned from our talented medical professionals, and gained valuable hands-on experience throughout the hospital.

From visiting Radiology and the Operating Room to spending time in the Emergency Department and so much more, each day offered new opportunities to learn, ask questions, and discover what a career in healthcare can look like.

Thank you to all of the students for your enthusiasm and curiosity, and to our incredible team members who shared their knowledge and passion for caring for others. We hope to see some familiar faces wearing scrubs in the future!
