If you’re in Louisiana or the Gulf South, you already know a lot of general gardening advice doesn’t translate well to our heat, humidity, long growing season, and unpredictable weather.

I put together a Southern Food Resilience Bundle for people who want to stop guessing and start building a more intentional home-growing system.

It includes:
🌱 a Seasonal Planting Plan to help organize what to grow and when
🌱 a Regenerative Southern Polyculture Guide covering layered planting, guilds, soil regeneration, succession, and integrated growing systems

I created it for people who want to move beyond planting a few random vegetables and start thinking about the whole system—soil, season, diversity, productivity, and long-term resilience.

If that’s something you’re working toward, you can see the bundle here:

I’d also love to know: what’s the biggest thing you struggle with growing food in the South—timing, pests, heat, soil, or knowing what to plant together?

You don’t need acres of land to start growing food. 🌱💧 Sometimes you just need water, light, a small space, and the knowledge to begin.

Lettuce, green onions, leafy greens, herbs, microgreens and even some kitchen scraps can be grown or regrown using water-based methods. For a true long-term harvest, many crops will eventually need nutrients—not just plain water—but hydroponic growing can turn a windowsill, countertop, balcony, classroom, or small urban space into a productive growing area.

That’s what food independence can look like: start small → learn the system → harvest → regrow → expand.

And when you learn how to grow something yourself, you’re not only growing food—you’re growing a skill nobody can take away from you. 💚

Your body already has powerful systems for filtering waste, processing nutrients, and maintaining balance. 🌱 The goal isn’t to “detox” your organs with one miracle food—it’s to consistently give them the nutrients they need to do their jobs well.

Berries bring antioxidants. 🫐
Cruciferous vegetables bring fiber and protective plant compounds. 🥦
Nuts and seeds bring healthy fats and minerals. 🌰
Garlic, ginger, turmeric and herbs bring flavorful phytochemicals. 🌿
Colorful fruits and vegetables bring a wide range of micronutrients. 🍎🥬🍋

And that’s the part of holistic wellness I want us to remember: food can support health without needing to be marketed as a cure. What you eat repeatedly matters more than any single “superfood.”

🌱 Nourish. Heal. Grow. Glow.

Your garden is always communicating. The question is: are you reading the signs?

🌿 Curling or scorched leaves may signal excessive heat, intense sunlight or dry roots.

🌼 Flowers dropping early can happen when temperatures become too high for successful pollination and fruit development.

💧 Soil that dries immediately may need organic matter, mulch or more effective watering.

🌧️ Water standing after rain can indicate compacted soil, poor drainage or a bed positioned too low.

🌱 Stalled growth may be the plant protecting itself during extreme heat, saturated soil or another environmental stress.

Before adding more fertilizer or assuming you did something wrong, observe the weather, soil and plant together.

The weather may be the problem—not you.

Your planting calendar is a starting point—not a promise.

Plants do not respond to printed dates. They respond to soil temperature, rainfall, extreme heat, daylight, drainage and the conditions happening in your actual garden.

That means planting “on time” may still fail if:

🌱 The soil is too warm
☀️ Intense heat stresses young plants
💧 Heavy rain leaves roots waterlogged
🍂 Bare soil loses moisture too quickly
📅 Seasonal weather arrives earlier or later than expected

This is especially important for Gulf South gardeners, where intense sun and sudden rain can happen within the same week.

Learn to read the garden—not just the date.
