Nurse leaders, this one’s for you.

Stop spending performance reviews talking about ratings.

Your team already knows their score.

Use that time to ask questions that build confidence, create self-awareness, and help them see who they’re becoming.

That’s leadership.

Save this for your next performance review.

Let it be a line item for monthly or quarterly wellness care.

Talk about nervous system regulation! 😮‍💨

You need that touch, pressure, pull, cleanse, exfoliation and quiet time with your eyes close to just be.

To breath
To be still

And most importantly, to have them people provide professional touch that’s soothing and calming to the soul.

One of the hardest parts of leadership is recognizing that your nervous system enters the room before your words do.

My 2 Cents…
Trust requires truth.

I came across a quote recently that said:
“In order to have trust, you need to have truth.”
And as a nurse leader, that stopped me in my tracks.

Because one of the biggest misconceptions in leadership is that trust comes with the title.

It doesn’t.

Respect for the role may come first. Trust doesn’t. Trust is earned. And one of the fastest ways I’ve found to earn trust is through transparency.

Not oversharing.
Not violating confidentiality.
Not creating anxiety by communicating half-developed ideas.

Transparency. And there’s a difference.

As a leader, one of my values is that my team should never feel like they have to create stories in the absence of information.
Because people will always fill in the blanks.
And unfortunately, uncertainty is fertile ground for fear, assumptions, and rumors.

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way 🫠

Early in leadership, I probably shared too much and too soon because I believed transparency meant sharing everything.

It doesn’t.

Leadership maturity taught me that sometimes transparency looks like breadcrumbs.

Enough information for people to know:

✔️You’re aware.
✔️You’re engaged.
✔️You’re advocating.
✔️You’ll come back with more when you’re able.

That matters.

Because psychological safety isn’t built because people agree with every decision.
It’s built because people trust that they’ll be told the truth.

Even when the truth is:
“I don’t know yet.”
“I can’t share that right now.”
“This isn’t the outcome we wanted.”

The like, know, and trust framework we talk about in business and content creation works in leadership too.

People trust leaders they know, understand, and whoconsistently tell the truth.

Trust is expensive.
And leaders don’t inherit it with the title.
They earn it through consistency, transparency, and truth.

Where is your nervous system asking for familiarity while your soul is asking for growth?

This feels less like an event recap and more like a reflection on the importance of community. That’s where I think your caption should land.

This weekend reminded me that community is a form of soul care.

I had the privilege of attending the Black Health Connect ™️ Black Health Gala and 40 Under 40 Awards in Baltimore, and beyond celebrating Black excellence, what stayed with me most was the people.

To Dr. Duclas Charles 🤙🏾 🇭🇹 , thank you for having the vision to create spaces where Black healthcare professionals can connect, celebrate one another, and be reminded that we’re not building alone.

And to my girls… Dr. MyQueen Dickens, MSN, CNM, DNP , Monica Carter | Nurse Practitioner Negotiation Expert and K. Way MSN, AGPCNP, PMHNP-BC , y’all already know.

There’s something healing about getting dressed up, celebrating each other’s wins, laughing until your face hurts, dancing, hugging, and simply being in the room together.

As we get older, friendships require intention.

The group chat is beautiful.
The DMs are great.

But every now and then, you have to leave the chat, book the trip, buy the ticket, make the reservation, and be present.

Invest in your friendships.
Invest in your village.
Invest in the people who celebrate you when you win and hold you when life gets heavy.

Success is sweeter when you have people to share it with.

Here’s to Black excellence.
Here’s to sisterhood.
Here’s to community.

May we continue to build lives that give us something worth celebrating, and people worth celebrating with. ♥️
