Journey note 2: The closing ritual of drama therapy was one of my favorite moments — we linked our thumbs together to symbolize connection, community, and the ongoing support that drama therapy brings. It felt grounding and tender, a reminder that we’re never practicing or healing alone.

I’m so grateful for those professionals who have supported me throughout this journey. Ending with dancing felt like the perfect way to celebrate the joy, playfulness, and embodiment that this field invites. 💃

During my time in New Orleans, I also visited local museums and monuments — learning about NOLA’s deep history of immigration, Black communities’ social movement, and desegregation. It was humbling and powerful to reflect on how social justice, creativity, and healing are deeply intertwined. I’m inspired to apply those systemic lenses more in my practice.

The last videos and photos are little pieces of calm and inspiration — art, music, light, and moments that reminded me of why I love this world. 🌿🎨💫

In the drama therapy conference, the keynote speech was given by a local organization in New Orleans that uses creative interventions to build community connections.

We created our own “community badges” with art materials. Mine(2nd+3rd pics) shows how I imagine a community: the front with puzzle pieces and rays of light background symbolizes how people support together while carrying their own differences and cultures. I wanted to have 6 colors to represent q***r community, but just found 5 feathers of color :p

The goofy creature in the back was my drawing. It represents the playfulness I hope to bring into communities. Life is already hard enough; we can always play more and laugh more. The rest drawing was co-created by my group, and it felt joyful to see our imaginations connect.
It reminded me how creativity brings people together, even across differences.

After the keynote, I spent a few days wandering around New Orleans — a city full of music, art, nature, and connection.
Creativity and play show up everywhere, not just in therapy rooms. The following pictures are glimpses of what I love about this city — drag shows, live music, art, animals, and a vibrant sense of community. Such an inspiring place!

The fourth Tâi-gí gathering in September, Tâi-gí movie edition! We watched Night Blindness. This movie has English and Mandarin subtitles.
And we’ve learned many Tâi-gí words and phrases from the film together!
Always love the snack that everyone brings! This time we have some Taiwanese snacks: 太陽餅 Taiwanese Sun Cake, 黑糖粉條 Black Sugar Tapioca Noodles, and 愛玉甜湯 Aiyu Jelly Sweet Soup. Yummyyyyyy🤤🤤🤤

DM me your email if you'd like to join the meetup!

The third Tâi-gí meetup took place in August! As before, we had participants of mixed levels, and this time we also played Hedbanz to practice and guess Taiwanese—it was a lot of fun. Everyone interested is welcome to join! Just message me and I’ll add you to the listserv.
For September, we’ll be watching a Taiwanese movie (with English and Mandarin subtitles) together and discussing it. On another note, since I suddenly need to move to a new place, I won’t be able to initiate it in October. Hopefully, someone else can take the lead. Also, if anyone knows of a 1b1b or studio available in Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, or Piedmont, please let me know!

It just so happened that our second Taiwanese language meetup was right after the big recall votes in Taiwan. Reading some threads lifted my spirits somewhat. It didn’t hit me as hard as the 2018 same-sex marriage referendum—maybe because I’ve been through it before—but it was still a little hard to head out. So I posted some images after the group pic to cheer myself up 🥹

Still, it was really great seeing everyone and chatting in Tâi-gí. This one mixed different proficiency levels and was kind of experimental. We’re figuring things out as we go! I hope we can make it welcoming so people of all backgrounds can join and speak Tâi-gí together!

I planned to apply for the conference scholarship after I got accepted, but I just realized it’s too late 🫠 hope the ticket is not too expensive.

For my presentation at NADTA, my topic is ”Him-î / HsinYi’s Journey: Retrieve my Voice, Reclaim my Root.“
It’s about compressing over three years of my experiences in the U.S. into just nine minutes. At first, it felt overwhelming, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity to reflect and reorganize my ongoing journey in the US.

At the end of my presentation, I shared a Taiwanese song which also serves as the background music to this post — ”Dust It Off“ (拌拌咧) by 李竺芯Siri Lee.
This song deeply resonates with me. It reflects the emotional space I’ve been inhabiting lately, especially when I forget. It captures the joyful resilience of a child who falls down and treats it as play, the spirit of brushing off the dust and getting up again, continuing to play and live freely.

Thank you to everyone who listened, and to all the presenters — your stories moved me deeply and reminded me that crossing borders is never just about geography, but also identity, memory, and courage.
